Role Summary:
The Inorganic Chemist will be instrumental in driving the development and deployment of innovative water-reactive materials designed for rapid hydrogen production in military applications. This role demands a unique fusion of theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in inorganic chemistry, as well as leadership qualities to enable a new generation of hydrogen-based military capabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Laboratory Establishment:
Build and outfit a dedicated laboratory specifically for the development and testing of water-reactive materials.Fuel Recipe Development:
Investigate and develop multiple methods for synthesizing water-reactive fuels, with a focus on aluminum-based compounds.Material Optimization:
Refine selected methodologies to ensure reliable, consistent fuel production while minimizing dependency on expensive or critical materials.Scaling:
Devise and execute a strategy for transitioning fuel production from bench-scale to hundreds of kilograms, maintaining reaction consistency.Kinetics & Materials Analysis:
Conduct in-depth testing to characterize fuel properties, including reaction kinetics and the effects of various additives and contaminants.Process Documentation:
Thoroughly record chemical processes, methodologies, and quality control measures for internal use and compliance.Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Partner with mechanical engineers and CAD specialists to construct fuel production rigs and develop reactors for hydrogen generation.Safety and Compliance:
Conduct risk assessments and generate documentation to comply with safety, transportation, environmental, and military regulations.Innovation:
Actively participate in the ideation and development of new hydrogen-based products for military applications.Stakeholder Communication:
Effectively communicate project milestones, challenges, and updates to both internal and external stakeholders.
Qualifications:
Master's degree, PhD, or equivalent practical experience in Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a related field.
Hands-on experience in materials synthesis, processing, characterization, and failure analysis.
Familiarity with design of experiments and data analysis.
Demonstrated capability in scaling chemical processes.
Proficiency in script writing/programming (MATLAB, Python, LabView).
Ability to maintain and operate specialized processing equipment.
Familiarity with advanced material and reaction characterization techniques.
U.S. security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
Ability to work on-site in Billerica, MA.
Preferred Skills:
Experience in multi-phase chemical reactions.
Focus on aluminum or reactive metals.
Previous exposure to defense or startup environments.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Ideal Candidate:
An agile, forward-thinking individual capable of quick learning and adaptation. Must possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills and be willing to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Experience in the defense sector is advantageous but not mandatory.

Actual salary offers may vary based on (but not limited to) work experience, education and/or training, critical skills, and/or business considerations.
