Summary

The District Attorney's Office for the Macon Judicial Circuit seeks a highly experienced legal professional to manage complex criminal cases, with an emphasis on homicide unit assignments. The Senior Assistant District Attorney plays a key role in strategic decision-making regarding evaluation, charging, and prosecution of cases. This position includes case management, mentoring junior attorneys, legal research, drafting documents, courtroom appearances, and all other duties as assigned. The qualified applicant will have a minimum of five years of experience, with preference given to those with a background in major felonies. In addition, this position requires exceptional communication skills to effectively represent the state in court and to navigate intricate legal issues. A government vehicle will be assigned

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are representative of the work required for this job, but not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.

  • Independently manages and oversees a complex caseload of serious felonies.
  • Analyzes complex legal issues and develops effective prosecution strategies.
  • Reviews cases to determine if the investigation is complete prior to making a charging decision.
  • Reviews police reports, witness statements, and evidence, to include viewing and inspecting crime scenes when appropriate.
  • Collaborates with law enforcement to coordinate investigations and ensure successful prosecutions.
  • Makes charging decisions and drafts indictments, accusations, presentments, and other legal pleadings and motions ancillary to any criminal case.
  • Presents cases to the Grand Jury for indictment.
  • Reviews pertinent decisions, policies, regulations, and other legal matters pertaining to the case and remains updated on case law.
  • Prepares cases for trial by interviewing and selecting appropriate witnesses, researching and responding to legal arguments, preparing witnesses to present testimony, and extending plea recommendations.
  • Works with victims and victim advocates throughout the criminal justice process.
  • Prepares memorandums of law, briefs, and legal research for trial and appellate cases.
  • Prepares and files all pleadings relating to extradition, such as detainers, fugitive warrants, and other related matters.
  • Prepares and represents the State in various court appearances including preliminary hearings, bond hearings, pre-trial hearings and motions, sentencing procedures, quasi-civil condemnation procedures, and trials.
  • Mentors junior prosecutors by reviewing their cases, providing feedback and advice, and offering guidance on trial strategies.
  • Attends meetings and community events.
  • Serves on committees, makes presentations in the community, and provides training as needed and assigned.
  • Completes other responsibilities as assigned by the District Attorney or her designee.
  • Maintains Bar status and CLE hours.

Education, Training and Experience

Juris Doctor degree required. All applicants must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia or be in good standing with another state's bar association that is eligible for reciprocity admittance to the State Bar of Georgia; and be admitted to practice before the Georgia Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. Must have at least five (5) years' experience in trial advocacy, preferably to include the trial of major felony cases. Supervisory experience is also preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of local, state and federal laws.
  • Knowledge of judicial procedures and rules of evidence.
  • Knowledge of County and State ordinances and an understanding of their accepted interpretations.
  • Ability to draft legal instruments, proposed legislation, and legal opinions.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and relevant office software.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, administrative officials, local government staff, and with members of the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing on complex legal subjects.
  • Ability to analyze, appraise, and organize facts, evidence, and precedents and to effectively present such material orally and in writing.
