The purpose of this classification is to perform specialized technical and administrative tasks in the Workers Compensation Division of the Macon-Bibb County Human Resources Department. Responsibilities include verifying, monitoring, entering, and approving medical payments and reimbursements; reviewing and entering injury reports; and providing lead direction to assigned staff as required. This position serves as a lead worker over the Risk Specialist and will perform supervisory duties with delegated and/or decision-making authority.

  • Leads and coordinates daily work of the Risk Specialist: establishes workloads and prioritizes work assignments; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with co-workers, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise; assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment; assists with supervision of co-workers by reporting employee problems and providing input on disciplinary action and employee performance evaluations.
  • Researches and analyzes information, prepares reports, reviews, and enters injury reports, and assigns numbers.
  • Verifies and coordinates medical treatment: schedules doctor appointments, independent medical exams, physical therapy, and other medical services; refers individuals to specialty medical providers as necessary; enters data into employee databases; and coordinates with employees and medical providers to check the status of progress and return to work/disability.
  • Approves and monitors payments and reimbursements; verifies the accuracy of bills received; sets up new vendor files; obtains W-9s and business licenses from vendors as required; ensures vendor payments are processed with correct injury codes and vendor codes; conducts research and resolves problems with vendor payments; and establishes reserves for high exposure files.
  • Prepares State of Georgia workers’ compensation forms: confirms that monthly reporting forms are created/updated as required.
  • Interprets and explains policies and procedures and resolves problems related to workers’ compensation issues: answers telephone and walk-in inquiries.
  • Monitors funds allocated for workers’ compensation.
  • Processes Workers’ Compensation and Risk related payrolls.
  • Communicates with supervisor, payroll clerks, lawyers, medical providers, other employees, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review the status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
The Worker’s Compensation Analyst should possess a Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Business, or Public Administration or a closely related field required, a Master’s Degree is preferred; additionally, five (5) years of previous experience and/or training that includes insurance administration, workers’ compensation, occupational safety, risk management; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
 
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of a valid Georgia Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
  • Possession of a valid Georgia Insurance Adjuster’s License (must obtain within [1] year of employment).
  • Possession of a valid Certified Workers’ Comp Professional Certification (must obtain within [1] year of employment).

TRAVEL:

The Worker’s Compensation Analyst is required to travel on occasion, including possible occasional overnight travel.The Worker’s Compensation Analyst must be knowledgeable of the following principles, procedures, and concepts:

  • Working knowledge of the Workers' Compensation Act, county regulations, and other applicable state/federal statutes and regulations.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, body systems, and/or impairments and    their disabling effects.
  • Working knowledge of office procedures and files.
  • Ability to obtain facts that ensure that claims information is complete and accurate.
  • Ability to balance casework loads and efficiently process claims.
  • Ability to evaluate all medical and time-loss claims information to make determinations regarding payment of temporary total disability benefits and medical bills.
  • Good judgment in interpreting medical facts presented by a physician and applying these facts in determining an individual's capacity to engage in gainful occupation.
  • Significant knowledge of the duties performed by the Risk Specialist as it relates to     minimizing and/or mitigating risks.
  • Ability to read, assimilate and recall with marked proficiency facts, figures, and      descriptions, and to search for and obtain information.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with co-workers, the public, and other personnel.
  • Working knowledge of the tenets of supervision and motivation of employees.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and understand written materials.  Ability to effectively communicate information to supervisors, employees, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing in a professional manner in order to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and/or provide service. In addition, this position requires extensive contact with supervisors, other employees, and the general public.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to interpret and understand a variety of forms, reports, manuals, regulations, and other means of instruction and guidance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires light demands with intermittent sitting, standing, walking, computer use, and occasional lifting of lightweight objects.
