CLASS TITLE: CERTIFIED INTERPRETER-DEAF/HARD OF HEARING
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under general supervision, to assist a certificated teacher of the hearing impaired in instruction of hearing impaired students. Work under the direct supervision of a certificated teacher of the hearing impaired to facilitate communication between students with hearing impairments and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school system; provide interpreting and other support services to students with hearing impairments who are mainstreamed in a variety of school settings. Other duties that may be performed when not required to provide interpreting may include tutoring, and note taking. Employees in this classification receive general supervision from an assigned administrator and work with a certificated teacher within a well-defined framework of policies and procedures.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Provide sign to voice/voice to sign interpreting which may include American Sign Language, a form of manually coded English, and/or oral interpreting depending on the needs of the student.
Sign a variety of subject matter and instructional materials.
Provide tutoring and/or note taking and other support services (such as photocopying, typing, recordkeeping, etc.) when necessary and interpreting is not needed.
Provide interpreting for extracurricular activities and parent meetings when necessary (such as back-to-school night, graduation, etc.). These activities/meetings may extend beyond the school day.
Consult with the supervising and classroom teachers on a regular basis.
Monitor, on a regular basis, the effectiveness of hearing aides and other instruments intended to improve the students’ ability to receive auditory input.
Carry out authorized safety procedures.
Attend staff and inservice training meetings.
OTHER DUTIES:
Perform related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Intermediate Interpreter differs from the Certified Interpreter in that the latter requires interpreting proficiency at a Level 4 or 5 on a state agency approved certification. A typical assignment would be with students at secondary grade levels with advanced signing skills.

Technical signs and/or vocabulary used in classes to which assigned.
Code of Ethics prepared by the National Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf.

Madera County Office of Education’s established policies and procedures.
Applicable laws, codes, rules, and regulations related to assigned activities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and successful passage of a sign to voice/voice to sign evaluation at a Level 4 or 5 on a state agency approved certification.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License.
