Become a powerful voice for people with disabilities as our client's Housing Advocate. In this impactful position, you'll help individuals find accessible, affordable housing while advocating for systemic change through public speaking, engagement with elected officials, and community outreach.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist people with disabilities in finding accessible, affordable housing
- Build relationships with landlords, brokers, developers and property managers
- Represent our organization at public hearings, community events, and meetings with elected officials
- Advocate passionately for the independent living philosophy
- Organize and facilitate housing workshops (both in-person and virtual)
- Collaborate with staff on effective marketing of our housing program
- Stay current on federal, state, and local housing regulations
- Bachelor's degree preferred; Associate degree with 2 years human services experience accepted
- Knowledge of local housing issues affecting people with disabilities (or ability to learn quickly)
- Understanding of systemic issues affecting our organization with ability to advocate publicly
- Basic knowledge of Medicaid eligibility (or ability to learn)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Outlook, internet)
- Respect for persons with disabilities from diverse backgrounds
- Spanish language skills a plus
- Must have own reliable transportation for regular travel throughout Westchester County
- Willingness to attend advocacy meetings in Albany
- Comfort with public speaking and advocating in community forums
