HOUSING ADVOCATE
25-$28 / hr., full time, Salary depending on degree, experience, writing, communication and analytical skills.
Job Description : Provide assistance for individuals and families in locating and securing accessible, affordable housing, negotiate agreements with landlords, brokers, real estate developers, property managers; advocate for affordable housing as well as for the independent living philosophy
Assist People with Disabilities to find housing including placement and information and referral
Build relationships with local landlords, brokers, developers, property managers and other partner professionals to develop referral sources and agreements.
Advocate for accessible, affordable housing in the community, speak at hearing and other events
Understand the federal, state and local housing regulations
Participate in local housing events.
Manage housing workshops – in person and virtual.
Working collaboratively with staff to produce effective marketing of housing program. and procuring housing partners.
Participate in agency sponsored training.
And other organization advocacy duties
Job Requirements & Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree preferred. Associate degree with two years or more of experience in the human services field.
Preferred candidates should have a working knowledge of local housing issues faced by people who need affordable housing or the ability to learn.
Candidates must be able to understand the systemic issues that affect WDOM and publicly advocate for the organization
Candidates should have basic knowledge of Medicaid eligibility and coverage or be able to learn
Possess excellent written and oral communication and organizational skills.
Ability to actively listen and, when appropriate, counsel throughout the housing search process.
Ability to work well independently as well as part of a team.
Computer literate on basic Microsoft Programs such as Word, Outlook, and Internet search use.
Respectful of persons with a disability, from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
Bilingual skills preferred. Fluency in Spanish a plus.
Must Own Transportation – travel in Westchester
Attend one advocacy meeting in Albany.
