Conducts the apprehension, rescue and control of sick, injured, at-large or abandoned animals, both wild and/or domestic, as found within the jurisdiction of Madison County; conducts investigations into ordinance or statutory violations, animal cruelty and neglect cases, and issues violation warnings and court tickets as appropriate. Interacts with the public, other outside agencies and organizations representing the Madison County government, performs related work as required.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
- Liaisons with the general public regarding county animal issues. Informs the public about the laws regarding animals, rabies, bites, and strays. Advises the public on the proper safety precautions relating to animal health and welfare, the importance of spaying and neutering household animals, and other information as directed.
- Patrols area of responsibility; Assists Madison County Sheriff, Illinois State Police and township officials when requested.
- Receives and investigates complaints involving possible violations, follows up on correction of ordinance and state violations, offers advice on solutions, and makes follow-up inspections.
- Issues violation warnings and tickets as required.
- Conducts emergency on-call after hours, in rotation as required.
- Maintain open availability during weekend hours as required for response to call outs or emergency disaster response.
- Utilizes animal control tools, equipment and vehicles in the proper manner, and maintaining same in proper working order.
- Prepares activity reports and records of inspections, investigations, transactions and correspondence according to established policies and procedures.
- Assists in the facilitation of transfer of impounded animals to various humane societies and animal welfare groups. Accordingly, will assist various humane societies and animal welfare groups in accessing available animals for potential adoption.
- Adheres to timelines/deadlines and balances their workload when involved in multiple projects.
- Assist with animal bite investigations and rabies registration as required.
- Provides radio dispatch capabilities.
- After licensing and training, perform humane euthanasia when needed.
- Set live traps for animals when appropriate.
- Cleans and disinfects kennels in the prescribed manner according to best practices.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
A high school diploma and six months of experience as an animal control officer or relevant work are required. A Certified Euthanasia Technician license issued by the State of Illinois, and Illinois driver’s license with appropriate classification, and satisfactory driving record are also required.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions; extreme heat; and other unsanitary and cluttered environments. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. An employee may also work in an environment around many animals. Because of the level of animals in the work environment, employees may be exposed to dander and other allergens found on animals. The employee is frequently required to walk and sit and must have full use of both hands. The employee is occasionally required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
