Job Description: Literacy specialists work extensively with students to address specific needs when regular classroom instruction is not sufficient. They work with teachers using assessment data and observation to design methods of learning that are appropriate for each child. They provide research and evidence-based interventions to students individually and in small group settings. Literacy specialists collaborate internally and with administrators, teachers, district specialists, and parents in a variety of contexts, including tier meetings, PLCs, planning times, analyzing data, co-teaching and/or modeling tasks in the classroom, and conducting in-district professional development. Literacy specialists are expected to demonstrate expertise in structured literacy, ELA content, current research-based instructional strategies, and interpersonal skills. They focus on all five of the main components of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Literacy specialists are expected to continue to grow as professionals by attending professional development and professional conferences, investigating evidence and research-based interventions, and sharing materials among colleagues.
Requirements Or Qualifications
Education Level: Master's degree issued by an accredited college or university
Required Licensure: Applicants must hold a valid AA Mississippi license in Elementary Education (a 174 reading endorsement is preferred)
