What are the responsibilities and job description for the Geotechnical Engineer/ Geologist position at Madsen, Kneppers & Associates?
We are seeking to add highly motivated, junior- to mid-level Engineers and / or Geologists to the team of multi-disciplinary civil and geo-professionals in our California offices. The individual will have knowledge in the behavior of soils and subsurface geology and their interaction with building and structural components for use in forensic analysis of a wide variety of project types including buildings, civil infrastructure, retaining walls, excavations, slopes, foundations, power generation and distribution systems, water retention and conveyance facilities, and much more. Experience in performing failure cause & origin analysis on soils, subsurface geology and building system interaction, authoring geotechnical engineering evaluations / technical reports, and construction litigation is desired. Material types investigated include, but are not limited to, soil, bedrock, concrete, aggregates, asphalt, masonry, wood and metals.

Responsibilities and Duties include :
- Field work to document as-built conditions and extent of damage as a result of natural (wind, water, fire, earth movement, etc.) and / or human induced origins (design and construction errors / omissions). Natural events can include large catastrophes such as regional floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes.
- Utilize building codes, technical knowledge of civil and geotechnical methods, and understanding of construction practices to establish repair scope recommendations as well as cause and origin analyses.
- Evaluate subsurface exploration (via drilling, test pits, etc.) and evaluate ground conditions and understand their impact on design and construction.
- Perform geotechnical analyses, including shallow and deep foundations, retaining walls, slope stability, trench work, temporary retaining systems, dams and flood control systems, storm water and drainage systems, pavements, liquefaction, settlement and seismic assessments.
- Evaluate design drawings and documentation.
- Communicate with clients, interface with code officials and contractors and provide detailed reports.
- Manage multiple project assignments, executing them on time and within budget.
- Retention and development of client relationships.
- Willingness to travel, as needed, on short notice at times.
