Special Education Teaching Assistant
Job Description
JOB GOAL: To assist the Special Education Teacher in providing a well organized, smoothly functioning, classroom environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience and interest working with children
- Demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed
- High School diploma or equivalent and advanced training that meet the standards for a para-professional as outlined in NCLB
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
REPORTS TO: Special Education Director and Assigned Teacher
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Establishes a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the students without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement
- Works with small groups of students to reinforce previously learned information
- Observes, consults with, and assists individual classroom Teacher
- Assists individual children in need of special attention, such as assisting from vehicles to building; transportation to integrated classes, etc.
- Guides independent study, enrichment work and remedial work set up by the Teacher
- Assists Teacher with non-instructional classroom duties, such as snack, hygiene, accompanying students for the changing of classes, toilet and clothing routines
- Checks student notebooks, corrects papers, and oversees testing and make-up work
- Assists in drill work, reading, storytelling, and small groups of students in the Library
- Attends mainstream classes with students, when necessary
- Adapts study guides and tests in accordance with student’s IEP
- Assists substitute teacher in classroom and explains daily routines
- Helps maintain a safe, productive learning environment in the classroom
- Participates in staff development training programs
- Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers
- Any other activities as assigned by the Special Education Supervisor

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
