(You would even leave at 2:00 p.m. on Friday!) Join our team at Maine Family Eye Care as our newest Full Time Optician. We are not the biggest but are a very busy and a quickly growing optical practice of 30 years in South Portland, searching for someone that's knowledgeable about office procedures and optical materials. Our friendly and hardworking team helps with the well being of our patients. If you are detail-oriented, like people and like the fast pace of a medical office, this may be the job for you!

Our Full Time Optician greets our patients in an enthusiastic manner as they arrive, guides them through the initial steps of their optical experience, is trained to dispense and fit glasses, working from prescriptions written by Optometrists and Ophthalmologists. The Optician delivers legendary patient service and perfectly crafted, high quality eye wear, which meets and exceeds our patients expectation. An optician takes into account patients facial features, occupation, and habits to assist them in choosing the best eyeglass frames, lenses, and lens coatings to fit their needs while also achieving monthly sales goals and excellent patient care.

Responsibilities for our Optician Include:

  • Greet patients and provide excellent patient care, ensuring the patient knows what to expect;
  • Custom fits glasses and precisely places the prescription in the frames purchased;
  • Verifies order data entry, comparing Rx to the original Rx provided from the doctor assuring all information entered in the system is accurate;
  • Takes and records measurements, assures correct frame selection for Rx power, reads prescriptions on the lensometer, adjusts and fits eye wear correctly, thoroughly and are exacting in details, ensuring the finished eye wear meets standards and patient requirements;
  • Completes proper order filling procedures including filing the order under the correct ABC system in the office, noting time received, time notified and time of dispense of each job;
  • Ensures that accurate funds are collected, that charges are made to vision care plans, and that payments are made at the point of service;
  • Delivers sales by providing excellent patient service in person or over the phone. Must be able to explain in detail all procedures included under the exam fee, must be open and honest in communication and maintaining a friendly pleasant demeanor with patients all the time;
  • Adheres to all privacy and confidential/ proprietary company policies and procedures (i.e. Health Information Portability and Accountability Act, known as HIPAA) as required by law.
  • Performs work accurately and thoroughly utilizing all technology despite time pressure and patient volume. Demonstrates superior product knowledge, takes the initiative to accurately describe the features and benefits of various lenses and frames using appropriate tools, and reinforces patients final selection;
  • Anticipates problems, explores underlying reasons for patient issues, strives to develop long-term solutions to problems and ensures patients are satisfied and expectations are exceeded, assuring a long term partnership;
  • Possesses the ability to multi-task, prioritizing and managing time with competing priorities;
  • Presents, celebrates and educates at pick-up;
  • Takes pride in office appearance, shows initiative to keep office clean, attractive and organized;
  • Possesses a can do spirit and strong drive for results, is self-motivated with a desire for continual learning and improvement;
  • Additional duties may be assigned as needed (i.e. customer calls, scheduling appointments, etc.). Participate in the team environment by displaying and following through and to be able to help assist co-workers in any way;
  • Maintains proper dress code;

Skills & Qualifications for our Optician Include:

  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • ABO Certification preferred;
  • Must have optical dispensing experience;
  • Must have knowledge of optical products and business practices;
  • Awareness of current fashion trends;
  • Embraces new technology and change;
  • Must have a great communications skills both spoken and written;
  • Must be able to multi-task and work under pressure;
  • Must be proficient with technology;
  • Must be efficient, organized and resourceful;
  • Must pay strong attention to detail;
  • Must have a professional demeanor, be dependable and punctual.

Benefits Include:

  • $20 to $27 per hour, negotiable based on experience and skill level;
  • Eleven paid holidays a year;
  • Up to 40 hours sick pay per year;
  • Medical and Dental Benefits;
  • 2 weeks Vacation Time to start;
  • Education reimbursement to maintain ABO Certification.
