Statement of the job :

The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) seeks applicants to fill the position of Substitute Teacher. This position is responsible for assisting in the implementation of a developmentally appropriate preschool program in a childcare setting, as well as assisting with the supervision of UMF practicum students, interns, and work-study students. This position works closely with children, families, UMF students, and faculty.

Essential Duties

  • Protects the safety of all children in the center and monitors children closely.
  • Communicates and interacts with children during care taking routines and free engagement time.
  • Manages the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions, and maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Exhibits sensitive and responsive caregiving, reading and responding to children's cues and needs, and facilitating independence and the development of self-help skills when appropriate.
  • Exhibits behavior management consistent with Sweatt-Winter philosophy, including recognizing and identifying difficult feelings, redirection, setting up the environment to minimize stress and conflict, and positively reinforcing children while engaging positively with others.
  • Interacts with children during play activities both indoors and on the playground.
  • Treats parents and children with dignity and respect, recognizing the cultural and socioeconomic diversity of the population.
  • Adapts teaching methods to fit the needs of each student.

Qualifications :

Required Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or the equivalent
  • At least one year of experience in Early Childhood Education or a related field
  • The ability to work well with children and families
  • Current CPR / First Aid certification (or completion within the first 30 days)
  • Successful completion of DHHS fingerprinting and background check
  • Completion of training required by State of Maine Licensing
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or related field
  • One (1) to three (3) years of preschool teaching experience
  • Experience mentoring pre-service teachers
  • Post-graduate teaching experience
