General Description:
This position is highly skilled in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of locks, door closers, wall lockers, and doors (metal and wood) throughout the school division. This position performs work under the general supervision of the structural foreperson. The technician must exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative in performing assigned duties and exercising tact and courtesy in frequent contact with subordinate workers, supervisors, and various department heads.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Installs, maintains, repairs, and configures major industrial and domestic locks
- Sets up master and sub-master lock systems
- Installs and repairs vertical and horizontal panic hardware
- Repairs and refurbishes locks using old and salvaged lock material
- Installs and repairs mortis, unit, integer, cylinder, deadbolt and auxiliary style locks
- Opens and corrects defective padlocks, desk locks, file cabinet locks, and changes and resets lock combinations where necessary
- Repairs, adjusts, and modifies various doors
- Makes keys for locks, cutting key blanks to master key sample
- Ensures proper maintenance of tools, other door, and lock-related equipment
- Organized and maintained a safe working environment
- Drives a vehicle to and from work locations keeps vehicle supplied with tools and materials and performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of an accredited apprenticeship program or; any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the referenced knowledge of tools, materials, techniques, and equipment of the locksmith trade
- A valid Virginia driver’s license with a good driving record is required
- Must be flexible to work after hours and weekends; overtime may be required
- Ability to work in small areas
- Skilled in differentiating types and styles of industrial and domestic locks and systems
- Skilled in assembling, disassembling, repairing, fabricating, and picking locks
- Skilled in cutting keys to master key designs and specifications
- Must have good knowledge of the occupational hazards and required safety precautions and the ability to interpret and work from instructions, guidelines, regulations, and policies
- Must have the ability to work with supervisors, managers, and school/department administration and staff
- Must have sufficient strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks of lifting (50-75 lbs), stooping, bending, and carrying equipment and materials to and from work sites
- Proficient in the use of computers and job-related software
- A performance test may be required to demonstrate the required skill level
