MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN II - GENERAL
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Director of Facility Operations

Employment Terms: 12-Month Full-time Position (260 Contracted Days)
Grade: E/G5
Position Summary
Performs intermediate semi-skilled work maintaining and repairing school buildings and grounds facilities, and related work as apparent or assigned. Position requires ability to work flexible hours or evening shifts as projects dictate. Work is performed under moderate supervision of the Director of Facility Operations.

Essential Functions
- Performs grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing grass, edging walks, pruning and trimming trees and hedges.
- Operate machinery such as tractors, mowers, and various skilled trade tools. Apply chemicals and fertilizer.
- Prepare reports, work orders, timesheets, logs and records.
- Repair, replace, or install doors/hardware, windows, stairs/railings, drywall, decks, ramps, and ceiling tiles.
- Repairs roofs, benches, desks, chairs, fences, etc.
- Assemble/build playground equipment and school furniture.
- Performs general locksmith functions; repairs and replaces lock cylinders and cores; cuts keys; installs panic bars and door closures.
- Estimates material needs and purchases materials.
- Delivers supplies to locations as needed.
- Perform minor electrical tasks such as light bulb changes or replacement of switch covers.
- Perform minor plumbing work such as plunging a toilet.
- Repairs, replaces and installs paneling, tile, ceilings, walls, bases, and other items in buildings.
- Repair, replace, or install basic fixtures such as soap and paper towel dispensers and racks.
- Repair, replace, or install exterior items such as mailboxes, signs, posts and gates.
- Perform interior and exterior paint work as necessary
- Assist other trades in performance of basic maintenance tasks.
- Assist in activities such as earthwork and snow removal.
- Performs any other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of the common practices, tools and terminology of the mechanical/building trade assigned.
- General knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials.
- General knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with the assigned trade.
- Ability to work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment in determining operating conditions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Qualifications, Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED.
- Moderate experience in building and grounds maintenance and repair, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Physical Requirements
- This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.
- Work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and lifting and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions.
- Work has standard vision requirements.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, and observing general surroundings and activities.
- Work frequently requires exposure to wet, dry, humid, hot and cold conditions that are not weather related.
- Work frequently requires exposure to extreme heat and cold, that is weather related.
- Working near moving mechanical parts, high and precarious places, exposures to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, and exposure to vibration,
- Work may require exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may require the use of specialized personal protective equipment.
- Usage of standard personal protective equipment.
Special Requirements
- Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia or School Board.
- Experience operating lawn care equipment (tractors. mowers, hedge trimmers, edgers ,blowers,etc.).
- May require a valid driver’s license to operate division-owned/leased motor vehicles. The incumbent’s driving record will be subject to periodic review, and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual.
