Job Description
Title: High School Athletic Trainer
Division: Athletic Department
Reports to: Athletic Director
Status: Full-time, Non-exempt, Academic Year
Salary: $40.00/hr - $45.00/hr and $12,000 Temporary Cost of Living Allowance and MWA Benefits. CalSTRS Retirement Eligible (during the Academic Year).
Summary
Reporting to the Athletic Director, the Athletic Trainer is responsible for the prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for our high school student-athletes. This role requires a commitment to ensuring the health and safety of our athletes while supporting their athletic performance and plays a crucial role in supporting the health and well-being of our student-athletes. The Athletic Trainer needs to be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Injury Prevention & Care
- Administer first aid and emergency care; Provide immediate care for athletic injuries during practices and competitions. Assess the severity of injuries and determine appropriate treatment plans, including referral to a specialist when necessary. Monitor and manage concussion follow up in compliance with CA Ed. Code 49475: AB 2127 for affected athletes.
- Liaise with parents regarding their child's injuries and treatment plans.
- Maintain a professional, organized, sanitary high school athletic training facility.
Athletic Event Coverage
- Attend home athletic competitions and selected away events as required. Inspect and monitor safety conditions of the practice, playing and training areas.
- Provide on-site medical support for home and away teams during games and practices. Coordinate with visiting teams' medical staff when necessary.
- Regularly communicate with coaches about athletes' injury status and limitations.
Rehabilitation & Treatment
- Supervise rehabilitation programs for injured athletes. Provide therapeutic treatments and modalities as needed. Monitor athletes' recovery progress and determine readiness to return to play.
Education & Consultation
- Educate coaches, athletes, and parents on injury prevention strategies. Provide guidance on proper nutrition, hydration, and conditioning.
- Conduct workshops on sport safety and injury prevention techniques.
- Attend seasonal coaches and parent meetings to explain Athletic Training Procedures.
- Implement, evaluate, and regularly rehearse the emergency action plan (EAP), with teams and coaches, including specific procedures for cardiac arrest and other medical emergencies related to athletic program activities and events, documenting the manner and frequency of rehearsals.
Administration
- Collaborate with the Athletics Director and school administration on health and safety policies. Develop, implement and evaluate injury prevention programs for all sports, and develop, implement and evaluate Emergency Action Plans for athletic spaces.
- Maintain a database of pre-participation records, health records, and document student illness and injuries.
- Manage inventory of medical supplies and equipment. Maintain and distribute supplies for team medical kits.
- Coordinate with physicians and other healthcare providers.
- Ensure compliance with school, district, and state regulations regarding athletic health and safety.

- Participate in the school community – attending school competitions, performances, assemblies, and supporting student events, student clubs, and club advisors.
Work Environment
- This job operates in an indoor and outdoor school environment and routinely uses standard office/school equipment.
- Evening and weekend work required to cover athletic events. Occasional travel for away games.
Physical Demands
- Lift and carry objects up to 100 pounds (with assistance); Move around campus, including gyms, fields, and turf; Bend, stretch, twist, or reach out; Maintain balance or stay upright in unstable positions; Use hands and fingers to operate equipment and tape students; Coordinate movement of multiple parts of the body; See differences between colors, shades, and brightness; Hear sounds and recognize differences between them. Be able to handle outdoor temperatures; Be able to work long periods of time without getting tired or out of breath.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or related field and 2 years experience as an Athletic Trainer, preferably in a high school setting.
- Strong knowledge of various sports and their specific injury risks.

Licenses or Certificates
- Employment eligibility will include fingerprints/Live Scan, tuberculosis (TB) screening, and other employment clearance.
- Current Athletic Trainer Certification (ATC) from the Board of Certification; Current state licensure or registration as an Athletic Trainer; Current certification in CPR and First Aid.
