Under the general direction and supervision of the Recreation Manager, Recreation Supervisor, and Recreation Coordinator, the Recreation Assistant II implements, oversees, and schedules recreation and enrichment programs, activities, and events of the City of Malibu Community Services Department. This position assists with the general operations of City facilities and general recreation programs by enforcing rules and regulations, applying policies and guidelines, and preparing for the facility's daily operation with minimal supervision. Support the Department's general operations, which may include working on nights, weekends, and holidays.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate should have experience working with older adults (age 50 ) in addition to planning, coordinating, and marketing recreation programs for this age group. The Recreation Assistant II will support Department staff and supervise part-time staff by appropriately delegating tasks, scheduling, and overseeing projects. The ideal candidate will work cooperatively with outside organizations such as the Malibu Library, Dial-A-Ride transportation provider, health professionals, and County or State representatives. The Recreation Assistant II will professionally explain and enforce Department rules and regulations governing facilities, parks, and programs. The ideal candidate will have leadership, organization, critical thinking, and multi-tasking skills; using English effectively to communicate, both orally and in writing, and will display a positive attitude and ability to provide excellent customer service to the public, contractors, and City staff.
• Assists with planning, organizing, and supervision for City programs, activities, and events for participants of all ages.• Communicates information and appropriately responds to inquiries from the general public, contract instructors and City staff in person, via telephone and electronic communication.
• Directs, schedules, and delegates tasks to part-time/seasonal personnel and communicates performance related concerns to the Recreation Manager.
• Collects program registration fees, prepares records, and activity reports in accordance with established procedures.
• Explains and enforces Department rules and regulations governing facilities, parks and programs.
• Assists in the development and promotion of programs including marketing and graphic design.
• Updates and creates program website and social media content.
• Conducts routine facility inspections and documents general usage and issues related to maintenance and safety.
• Updates and maintains park equipment and supply inventories.
• Prepares facilities for programs and reservations.
• Assists with minor maintenance of recreational facilities and equipment including cleaning and stocking facilities.
• Represents the park and recreation interests of the City.
• Performs other duties as assigned.Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
• Candidate must be at least 18 years of age by the time of employment
• Completion of high school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum of three years of responsible prior experience in related recreational activities and experience in personnel and facility management
• Currently enrolled in college or college degree is highly desirable
License/Certifications:
Certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and Standard First Aid upon hire. Must possess and maintain a valid California class C driver license and have a satisfactory driving record. Other certifications may be required depending on program assignment.Knowledge of:
• Recreation programming including community classes, cultural arts, day camps, sports, seniors and special events
• Concepts, principles, and practices of parks and recreation programs, activities and events
• General facility and parks operations
• Part-time staff supervision
• General understanding of operating audio-visual equipment
• Computer applications including the Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of the Adobe suite and recreation software preferred
• Standard office administrative procedures including the use of standard office equipment
