Work Hours : Monday - Friday, 7 : 00 am - 4 : 00 pm
Performs highly skilled technical work in securing and maintaining compliance with all applicable building codes and regulations governing building construction, alterations, and repairs. Examines plans, blueprints, diagrams, surveys, and similar documentation. Inspects commercial, industrial, and other job sites. Independently interprets and impartially applies pertinent codes and regulations acting as a code enforcement officer. Regularly interacts with property owners, contractors, and the general public, always providing a high level of customer service.
Working Conditions
Indoor office and outdoor field environment. Work requires time outdoors for extended periods in a variety of weather conditions. High noise and high stress environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting equipment up to 50 lbs. alone and up to 100 lbs. with assistance. Regularly required to drive county vehicles as part of the duties of the job. Able to bend, stoop, crawl, and reach. Position requires visual acuity and depth perception, as well as ability to hear and identify sounds.
Job Description
Essential Functions

Analyzes and interprets complex plans and specifications submitted for building, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing permits to evaluate compliance with applicable code requirements and State regulations. Approves and signs plans that meet required specifications.
Inspects building construction to ensure compliance with codes and approved building permits. Detects and locates defective workmanship and materials. Takes appropriate and effective corrective measures based on stage of construction.
Measures dimensions and verifies level, alignment, and elevation of structures and fixtures to ensure compliance with building plans and codes.
Renders final approval of appropriate permits upon completion of construction.
Protects and improves the health, safety, welfare, and qualify of life of Manatee County by independently investigating and documenting alleged code violations for which the division has enforcement responsibilities acting as a code enforcement officer.
Investigates complaints and / or unauthorized building construction. Recommends approved construction methods, practices, and materials to contractors and property owners.
Prepares and issues notices of violation and warnings. Posts stop work orders as required. Attends hearings and appears in court, as required, acting as a code enforcement officer.
Enforces all aspects of County Ordinances including complaint investigations, posting determinations, research, and course of action pertaining to unsafe structures.
Confers with and advises contractors, property owners, architects, engineers, and the general public regarding interpretation and application of building codes, and other applicable laws and regulations.
Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports. Drafts business letters to contractors, architects, engineers, and manufacturers as needed.
Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Standard License in one discipline (Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical) issued by the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board (BCAIB) as an Inspector or Plans Examiner required.
In lieu of licensure, four (4) or more years of verifiable experience as, or under the supervision of, a registered or state-certified general, building, or residential contractor is required. Licensure in individual contractor trades may be considered.
Valid driver license with valid Florida driver license within 30 days of hire.
Provisional Licensure from BCAIB as an Inspector or Plans Examiner required within the first 120 days of employment. Standard Licensure(s) required within one year of board approval of Provisional License.
