General Information
Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Supervises the daily operations of assigned planning and zoning technicians within the Planning Division, ensuring compliance with the Land Development Code and Comprehensive Plan.
Working Conditions
Indoor/Office situation; high noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting equipment up to 25 lbs. alone; up to 50 lbs. with assistance. Sitting for long periods of time, working on computer.
- NOTE: This position has been designated by the Manatee County Commission as serving at the will and pleasure of the County Administrator. Employees so designated may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
Job Description
Essential Functions

Supervises the daily operations of assigned planning and zoning technicians.
Assigns work and delegates responsibilities to staff and monitor’s progress of staff performance.
Works directly for Planning Section Manager and helps to perform various personnel-related duties, i.e., recommending hiring/firing, handling disciplinary actions, completing employee performance evaluations, etc.
Clear knowledge of all major functions of reporting staff to provide back up as needed.
Conducts regular quality control checks to ensure compliance with the Land Development Code and Comprehensive Plan.
Trains and coaches’ staff on business processes and regulations.
Conducts research and communicates findings to applicants, citizens, staff and management.
Maintains knowledge and understanding of current best practices, trends, laws and issues affecting area of expertise.
Coordinates testing and training of changes affecting business processes.
Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in urban and regional planning or a related field relevant to area of assignment with two (2) or more years professional experience in planning, construction, zoning, land use regulation or related field relevant to area of assignment.
A comparable combination of education, training, and work experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position, may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Good knowledge and understanding of socio-economic and physical characteristics of Manatee County.

Strong written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills to be able to deal professionally and effectively with staff, developers, public officials, and other stakeholders.
Able to communicate policies, practices, and procedures for clarity and understanding. Able to explain technical subject matter to a non-technical audience.
Able to conduct staff trainings and participate in outreach activities to educate the public.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with others.
