Your internship will include impactful hands-on work within a county department, networking, professional development, and building lasting connections with other interns, mentors, and Manatee County team members.
- Program Dates: The 2024 internship program will begin on May 19th, 2025, and end on August 8th, 2025.
- Internship Hours: Up to 27 hours/week (maximum), Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; may vary by department.
- Pay Range: $14 per hour up to $20 per hour (graduate/ master’s student), based on the number of credit hours earned.
Project Summary: Benchmarking and Strategic Recommendation for Public-Facing GIS Tools
The intern will research and review GIS tools, data, and applications used by counties and similar size municipalities nationwide. The focus will be on identifying best practices and solutions that align with Manatee County’s strategic vision, mission, and goals. The intern will develop a comprehensive list of public-facing GIS applications, emphasizing tools that enhance public engagement, transparency, and operational efficiency. From this list, the intern will select a subset of tools for a deeper evaluation and feasibility study.
The intern will analyze how these tools could be adapted to our County's needs, presenting a detailed business case that includes criteria for selection, a proposed implementation plan, estimated return on investment (ROI), and alignment with County Administration priorities. This project will culminate in a presentation to the County Leadership Team, where the intern will recommend specific tools for adoption and provide a clear, actionable roadmap for their development or configuration.
Department Responsibilities:
- Conduct research on how other Counties are using GIS tools and applications
- Review GIS data across all County departments
- Identify tools that improve accessibility, transparency, and engagement with County services
- Calculate ROI and alignment of tools with County Administration priorities
- Develop recommendation for the County to adopt specific GIS tools
Internship Program Responsibilities:
- A presentation to the County Administrator and other County Leadership staff is required at the close of the internship program.
- Participate in all organized intern events and trainings.

About You
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma, or equivalent (if applicable)
- Eligible to work in the United States – we love local, national, and international students!
- Currently seeking a diploma or degree through an accredited secondary or post-secondary educational program, or within 12 months after graduation.
