Manhattan Country School seeks a part-time Accompanist/Assistant Music Teacher for the 2024-2025 school year.

Music education, music and movement, school assemblies, and community gatherings are an integral part of the curriculum for pre-K through 8th grade at Manhattan Country School. The school’s mission informs the diverse repertoire and the commitment to building a community through music. MCS is seeking a pianist who can accompany the Upper School Chorus classes and play for periodic assemblies and concerts throughout the year.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Provide piano accompaniment for chorus classes
- Help lead school community by playing piano for school assemblies and concerts
- Ability to sight read well is crucial
- Ideally, transpose/modulate songs as necessary
- Assist music teacher with classroom tasks such as tallying votes, arranging chairs, carrying keyboard, etc.
- Assist music teacher with classroom management, writing reports, lesson planning, and run class in case of absence
The music faculty includes:
- Two part-time music teachers. The 4-5s through 7-8s (PreK-2) program incorporates singing, percussion instruments, movement, and dance into music classes that are held twice per week. Choral singing is introduced to students in 8-9s through 8th grade. The music teacher also teaches group recorder classes to 8-9s and 9-10s.
- One part-time accompanist who attends chorus classes. Part-time and temporary electives teachers for 6th through 8th grades, e.g., African drumming, music appreciation, rock band, instrumental ensemble, solo sing, etc.
The accompanist at MCS has the following schedule:
- Two mornings a week (days to be determined), September through mid-June
- Regular assemblies and concerts 6-8 times/year
- Option to join community activities and special fundraising events
- Support the music teacher and students (8-9s through 8th grade) in chorus classes

- Assembly of Gratitude and Remembrance (Wednesday before Thanksgiving)
- Winter Holiday Assembly (third Friday in December)
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Assembly (Friday before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day)
- Black Lives Matter Week of Action Assemblies (February)
- Lower School Sing-Along (May)
- Closing Assembly (second or third Thursday of June)
- Accompany student chorus at two Spring Concerts (mid to late May)
- Supervise choral classes in the event of music teacher's absence

As part of the interview process for this position, we will ask candidates to demonstrate their piano playing and sight reading ability, as well as their collaboration skills. This part-time position has a salary range of $16,000-$21,000 annually.
