POSITION SUMMARY

Are you interested in leading a fantastic Development team for a top-notch science-based organization with global reach and a headquarters overlooking Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts? Are you passionate about science and sharing impactful conservation work broadly?

If so, we seek a Vice President of Development to build on Manomet’s 50 years of banding birds, shorebird conservation, coastal resilience, research, and education and grow our influence nationally and across the Western Hemisphere.

The Vice President of Development is a key member of our leadership team and will play a significant role in our organizational strategy. The ideal candidate will have at least 15 years of experience in fundraising and development. This person will be able to represent Manomet with external stakeholders, including individual donors, foundations, and potentially the broader public.

Since Manomet’s beginnings as a bird banding operation in 1969, its science and research have expanded to focus on ecosystem management and resilience, shorebird conservation, and educating tomorrow’s leaders about the importance of the natural world. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Work closely with the President and program leaders to develop, coordinate, and advance unique strategies for donors.
  • Support and accompany the President, program leads, and development staff as they plan, execute, and follow up on visits with strategic major donors and prospects.
  • Help maximize the role of Trustees and Advisors as primary Manomet ambassadors to help identify and grow new relationships for the organization.
  • Understand the importance of balancing unrestricted and restricted funding streams to maximize growth at Manomet and work with relevant parties to grow both streams.
  • Through the Director of Development, oversee the work of Manomet’s development team as they work to acquire, renew, and grow individual, corporate, and foundation donors and friends.
  • Coordinate with senior staff, Manomet’s external Foundations consultants and program staff working on public sector grant proposals to ensure consistent messaging and to take full advantage of instances requiring private lead or matching/leveraging gifts.
  • Support the geographic diversification of Manomet donors in concert with and recognition of the organization’s widely dispersed national and international network of scientists and other staff.
  • Guide the strategy for external events participation and its alignment with development objectives, working closely with the communications team.
  • Work with colleagues to develop, manage and report on revenue and expense budgets for development.
  • Advise and mentor each Development team member to help them contribute to their fullest and grow professionally as the organization grows.
  • With the President, be a key interlocutor with the Trustees, particularly the Development Committee.
  • Other duties as assigned by the President.

PREPARATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • 15 or more years of major/principal gift fundraising experience. A bachelor’s degree is required. Business and other related master’s degrees preferred. Knowledge of and personal commitment to environmental conservation issues is strongly preferred.
  • Experience and expertise in working with top-level donors, volunteers, and donor advisors. Ability to deftly discover and match donor needs and desires with programs of Manomet in need of major support. Ability to teach, coach, mentor, and lead all staff members with direct donor contact on the best ways to work with their donors. The position requires excellent management and organizational skills, as well as strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have a reliable method of transportation.
  • Must successfully pass a background check.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability and willingness to travel to various locations in the US as necessary to complete job duties. Travel may also be international. Travel is reimbursed. (If applicable)
  • Normal office business environment.
  • Close work (paperwork, visual examination).
  • Occasional walking up and down stairs, standing, and bending.
  • Ability to sit at a computer for long periods of time.
  • Fully remote/Hybrid remote work possible.

SALARY RANGE: $145,000 - $160,000

Compensation commensurate with experience. Manomet offers excellent benefits, including health insurance, dental, 403b match, life insurance, and several other benefits.

Pay: $145,000.00 - $160,000.00 per year
