About the Position
The Inspector – Traffic Control Specialist reviews and approves traffic control plans for permit-related work within the county right of way. This position will periodically inspect permit projects between private contractors and Maricopa County. It is also responsible for assuring the project is completed safely and per approved plans and specifications or approved changes.

We Require
Two years of performing inspection work in traffic control, heavy highway construction, maintenance, utility construction, bridge construction, plan review, or geotechnical work
High school diploma or GED
Industry-related post-secondary education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis
Must possess an ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor certification
Must possess or have the ability to obtain an ATSSA Traffic Control Design Specialist within one year from the hire date
We Also Value
Degree in Engineering or a closely related field
Five years of experience in construction inspection, reviewing and approving temporary traffic control plans, and / or inspecting temporary traffic control setups
Job Contributions
Monitor, coordinate, and inspect temporary traffic control devices, setups, and other work; coordinate with contractors to ensure the safety of the traveling public, County staff, and contractor employees by confirming that setups are in accordance with MCDOT standards and / or MUTCD standards
Review and approve traffic control plans for compliance with MCDOT and MUTCD standards
Answer public relations questions and complaints from contractors and the general public
Serve as the divisions' traffic control expert and trains staff on traffic control
Assure permitting projects are completed safely per the approved plans / specifications or approved revisions. Promote and enforce public safety
Coordinate all permit activity with contractors, subcontractors, utility companies, survey crews, soils lab, consultants, geotechnical firms, developers, and engineers as construction proceeds
Conduct pre-construction conferences, ongoing inspections, and final acceptance inspections of subdivisions
Issue cease work and encroachment notices for unauthorized, unsafe, or deficient construction
Investigate citizen complaints and mediate a satisfactory resolution

Working Conditions
This position requires the employee to be in the office / field or customer-facing for all hours worked
Exerting 20 - 25 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly
The position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions
Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness / humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration
Incumbent may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel
Protective Equipment Required
Hard hat, vest, boots, and any other PPE required for site visits
