POSITION TITLE:
School Social Worker
RESPONSIBLE TO:

JOB CLASSIFICATION:

JOB SUMMARY:
School Social Workers coordinate the efforts of schools, families, and communities toward helping students improve their academic achievement and social, emotional, and behavioral competence. School Social Workers seek to ensure equitable education opportunities; ensure that students are mentally, physically, and emotionally present in the classroom; and promote respect and dignity for all students.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides support services directly to students and their families. Individual interventions may include any of the following: individual, group or crisis work, mental health assessments/referrals, DFCS referrals, social histories, medical/vision/dental follow-up, identifying and assisting homeless students and families, etc.
- Consults with school personnel as a member of a team assessing the best intervention for a student, including IEP conferences, RTI team, and others.
- Collaborating with community agencies to develop and implement the best intervention for a student, including coordination of social services, provision of goods and services, etc.
- Conducts home visits to assess the social environment, emotional, physical and safety needs of a student and to verify student residency as requested by schools.
- Provides casework assessment and services to students and their families.
- Enforces the Georgia Compulsory Attendance Law by conducting school-based or district-level meetings, following up with school-based personnel, communicating and working with outside agencies charged with assisting in compulsory attendance, etc.
- Keeps records of all necessary documentation and files appropriate legal paperwork, including case notes, DFCS referrals, court referrals, etc.
- Submits accurate monthly reports electronically on School Social Work Services provided at each assigned school.
- Conducts required training for mandated reporters of suspected child abuse and neglect.
NON-PROGRAM DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Complies with Code of Ethics for Educators adopted by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and the Code of Ethics for Social Workers adopted by the National Association of Social Workers, both of which are required by Marietta City Schools
- Complete other tasks as assigned by the District Administrator for Programs
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Required: Advanced degree in Social Work obtained from a research-based and practice-oriented program, approved by the Council of Social Work Education
- Must hold or be eligible for School Social Worker certification from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission
- Ability to interpret and speak an additional language preferred.
Experience:
A minimum of three years social work experience required.

- Ability to prioritize tasks and responsibilities daily, utilizing organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to develop recommendations for strategies to meet students’ needs and to identify the personnel and community agencies to carry out those strategies
- Knowledge of child and adolescent development, systems theory, and mental health issues
- Knowledge of social service agencies and resources and ability to work effectively with personnel in those agencies.
- Knowledge of various cultures and ability to work effectively with families of a diverse background.
Physical Demands:
Must be able to move quickly, lift a minimum of 30 pounds, stand and walk for long periods of time, and withstand extended periods of time in an automobile while traveling.
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
