Summary: The Licensed Vocational Nurse assists in the nursing process by instructing patients and caregivers in self-care and providing basic nursing care and participates with the other facility team members to provide optimal patient care and efficient patient flow, taking into consideration the population-specific needs of patients of all stages of life.

Essential Responsibilities will include the following, and other duties may be assigned.

Patient Care Duties:

· Assists with patient admission, preparation for surgery or procedures, transfers, and discharges.

· Collects patient admission and basic assessment data to integrate into the plan of care or teaching plan. Completes preoperative phone calls to collect data.

· Provides instructions in post-operative self-care as designated in the care plan and by physician order.

· Performs EKG, blood glucose, urine chemistry, and pregnancy tests.

· Provides urinary bladder irrigations, inserts, or removes urinary catheters and provides catheter care.

· Applies knee immobilizers, slings, orthotics, instruct crutch use, and similar devices.

· Ensures crash carts are maintained, supplied, and replenished while testing defibrillator.

· Provides oxygen or masks per physician orders and applies or removes sterile dressings, bandages.

Medical Administration Duties:

· Administers medications including: oral, rectal, inhalant, intramuscular, subcutaneous and iniraderMal and narcotics with appropriate PO.

· Initiates superimposes and disconnects intravenous fluids with vitamins, nutrients, and electrolytes through primary or secondary infusion lines (with valid IV Certification).

· Administers IV fluids without additives, regulate flow, monitor peripheral site (No IV antibiotics or other medications via primary or secondary lines).

· Promptly flushes peripheral IV insertion sites with heparin or saline (with valid IV certification).

Safety and Infection Control Duties:

· Adheres to established organization and ASC safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.

· Strictly adheres to aseptic techniques using a variety of supplies and instruments while actively monitoring the environment to ensure a sterile technique is maintained throughout procedures.

· Ensures procedure safety and success by leading the team responsible for participating actively in the time-out process.

· Actively adheres to standard safety procedures regarding proper personal sanitation and hygiene.

· Completes employee and patient incident documentation timely while identifying potentially unsafe conditions.

· Demonstrates a complete understanding of established emergency procedures and provides appropriate support.

· Focuses on process improvement by participating in inpatient service and safety process reviews.

Administrative Duties:

· Participates as a member of the team to promote a positive working environment and provides back-up support when requested or necessary.

· Maintains and reviews inventory levels against procedures scheduled, including inventory on hand.

· Makes suggestions to management for policy and procedure enhancements by conducting research, reviewing results, and presenting recommendations in a clear message.

o Required: One-year certificate from a college or technical school accredited with vocational nursing.
