The Marion County Court of Common Pleas, General Division, Adult Probation Department is seeking a motivated, independent, self-starter to serve as Probation Officer with the Adult Probation Department.

The probation officer supervises individuals convicted of felony offenses and sentenced to Community Control Sanctions (probation). The probation officer will regularly meet and have contact with offenders in the office, in the field, and in other locations such as correctional and/or treatment facilities. The probation officer develops case plans to address high need areas and identified risk factors. The probation officer will utilize evidence-based supervision practices to facilitate behavioral changes, while simultaneously ensuring the offenders’ compliance through appropriate enforcement mechanisms. The probation officer will investigate and verify information provided by the offenders. The probation officer will prepare written probation violation reports and/or probation violation waivers and testify in court as required. The probation officer will conduct drug screening as needed and transport offenders to correctional and/or treatment facilities as necessary. The probation officer conducts ORAS assessments.

Qualifications: Applicant must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution in the field of criminal justice, criminology, psychology, or a related field; OR an associate’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, social services, case management, counseling, or a related field and two or more years of relevant experience. Applicant must have strong oral, written, and computer communication skills as well as knowledge of Microsoft Office. Knowledge and understanding of computer databases preferred. Proficiency in record keeping, report writing, and problem solving required. Strong understanding of the legal processes associated with the criminal justice system preferred.

Special Requirements: Pre-employment screening required including employment references, criminal background check, and possible drug and skill testing. Candidate will be required to successfully complete the Probation Officer Academy Training within the first year of employment. ORAS and OPOTA Firearm certification and qualification required during the probationary period. Completion of the OPOTA firearms qualification course requires a one-year commitment. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and no prohibition against carrying firearms. Although minimal, some evening and weekend hours are required. This position reports directly to the Chief Probation Officer and Deputy Court Administrator for the Marion County Court of Common Pleas, General Division.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.50 - $21.00 per hour
