EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I
Summary of Position
Under the general supervision is responsible for performing routine Highway Transportation work; performs other related duties as required. Overtime is an expected part of this position especially during the winter months (snowplowing). We offer a great benefit package and no layoffs.
Illustrative Duties
The duties listed below are intended to illustrate work functions performed by the classification
- Operates road rollers, snow plows, berming box, tractor mowers, dump trucks, salt spreader, pickup trucks, power sweeper, light equipment
- May haul stone, dirt, asphalt, salt and other road materials; trailers and equipment to site
- Repairs and performs general maintenance of equipment used
- May be required to prepare reports of work performed
- Builds forms for concrete; sets steel in concrete
- Constructs guardrails; repairs guardrails, road berms, etc.
- Mow grass and weeds along county roads; cut brush along county roads; pick up trash along county roads
- Applies stone, blacktop, salt, chips, tar to county road surfaces; patching roadways, sweeping roadways
- May flag traffic in or around a job site
- May assist a mechanic in the garage
- Equipment Operator I may also be required to operate heavy equipment in emergencies or as a substitute for an Equipment II who is on authorized leave
- May be appointed as a crew leader in the absence of the supervisor
- Overtime is an expected part of this position especially during the winter months (snowplowing)
Necessary Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Ability to read and write
- Knowledge of simple construction and maintenance methods
- Ability to use common hand tools
- Ability to understand and carry out oral instructions
- Ability to perform heavy manual duties for long periods of time in all types of weather
- Ability to lift heavy object
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, supervisors and the general public
Qualifications Desirable for Employment
Any combination of training and work experience which indicates possession of the skills, knowledge and abilities listed above. An example of acceptable qualifications for this position are:
- Completion of twelfth grade and experience in performing semi-skilled related maintenance work
- Must have a valid Ohio Commercial “A” Driver’s license

Pay: $24.00 per hour
