    Job Description

    Marshall University's Department of Natural Resources and Earth Sciences (College of Science) seeks a qualified and dedicated individual to fill the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Natural Resources and Recreation Management. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in both teaching and research.

    This position provides an opportunity to contribute to the academic growth and development of students while engaging in impactful research related to natural resources, recreation, tourism, sustainability, human dimensions of the environment, outdoor / environmental education, adventure programming, or other closely related discipline.

    Key Responsibilities :

    Teaching

  • Develop and teach graduate and undergraduate courses as assigned by the Department Chair / Program Coordinator. Courses may include :
  • Introduction to Natural Resources and Recreation Management
  • Research Evaluation and Assessment o Visitor Behavior in NRRM
  • Recreational Resources Planning & Design
  • Park & Recreation Ecology
  • Recreation Operation and Administration
  • Additional courses in the candidate's field of expertise
  • The ability to teach inter-disciplinary courses in GIS / Remote sensing would be beneficial
  • Create and maintain a dynamic and inclusive learning environment that fosters critical thinking and active student engagement.
  • Advise students on curricular and career matters as assigned by the Department Chair or College Dean.
  • Research

  • Develop a rigorous, externally funded research program, with a focus on mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Publish scholarly work and present at regional, national, and international meetings.
  • Service

  • Participate in University, College, or Department committees in consultation with the Department Chair.
  • Participate in outreach and recruitment activities that connect the university with local and regional organizations, agencies, and communities.
  • Contribute to the College's support of interdisciplinary programs of study by working collaboratively with faculty and students from other units / departments.

    Required Qualifications

    Education

  • Earned doctorate in Recreation / Tourism Management, Natural Resources Management, Human Dimensions of Natural Resources, Sustainability, or closely related field.
  • Experience

  • A commitment to excellence in teaching, advising, and mentorship.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the field with a dedication to research and scholarship.
  • A commitment to supporting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive research and teaching environment.
  • Commitment to outreach, recruiting, and community engagement.
  • Preferred Qualifications

    Education

    Experience

    Experience teaching at the post-secondary level.

    Professional experience in natural resources and recreation management.

    An established research plan related to natural resource management, recreation resource management, human dimensions of the environment, outdoor / environmental education, adventure programming, nature-based / sustainable / ecotourism, visitor use monitoring, GIS / remote sensing, geospatial science and technology, non-profit or public administration, or similar.

    Demonstrated success in obtaining external research funding.

    Experience with online and distance education.
