What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utilities Lead Plant Maintenance Mechanic position at Martin County Board of County Commissioners?
Position serves as a team leader work in the installation, repair and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment and associated with emergency generators relative to wastewater/water systems. As a lead worker, is responsible for orienting, training, assigning and evaluating work assignments. Ensures that work orders are prioritized and issued to the appropriate personnel, and that work loads are evenly distributed. This includes performing skilled work of routine to complicated difficulty in the installation, maintenance and repair of the mechanical equipment.
The Utilities Lead Plant Maintenance Mechanic is distinguished from the Utilities Plant Maintenance Mechanic and Utilities Lead Plant Maintenance Mechanic by the level and scope of responsibility over employees and specialized assignments. The Utilities Lead Plant Maintenance Mechanic is the lead worker class in the series requiring greater skill and independence than lower-level classes in the series. Depending on the assigned area the Utilities Lead Plant Maintenance Mechanic has oversight of various Plant Maintenance assignments. This classification is responsible for supervising and directing the work of crew members, workers, and volunteers.
In the event of a natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area, the employee may be required to perform emergency duties as directed.

Orients, trains, monitors, and evaluates the day-to-day work of assigned utilities mechanics.
Performs team lead work in installing and maintaining mechanical and generator electrical equipment in water/wastewater plants.
Keeps manager apprised of progress and/or problems related to maintenance and repair of emergency generators and related equipment, wastewater treatment processes, and construction of rehabilitated or new stations.
Performs daily inspections, maintenance, cleaning, and repair of lift stations, sewage grit removal equipment, sewage grinding equipment, sewage screening equipment including pulling and replacing pumps, repairing and replacing pipe, valves, and fittings, and the operation and maintenance of lift stations and the associated properties.
Assists in hiring, interviewing, and evaluating of Utilities mechanics.
Cleans sewage spills and applies chemicals as required per federal, state and local laws to sewage spills.
Ensures the proper paperwork is submitted as required within the proper time frame.
Assists with ordering parts, pumps, and equipment as needed.
Responds to emergency and trouble calls, locates and identifies the cause and performs corrective actions as required.
Operates light and heavy-duty trucks, boom trucks, heavy lifting equipment, portable pumping equipment, power generation equipment, and various tools as required.
Maintains and is responsible for assigned truck, and equipment and insures tools are kept in proper working order at all times.
Maintains frequently used parts and supplies on his/her assigned truck to insure all parts needed for any given assignment are available and restocked as used.
Works days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and weather events as required, scheduled or needed.
Calculates flows and size of submersible pumps as needed.
Assists in the supervision and leads the utility mechanics involved in safely repairing/ maintaining water pumping stations, wellfield and water treatment plant machinery and equipment.
Leads the performance of preventive maintenance and minor welding; schedules repairs and preventive maintenance work to maximize efficiency of equipment; Coordinates and schedules testing of machinery, equipment and parts for proper operations; Evaluate problem situations with mechanic staff.

Thorough knowledge of pumps, machinery, motors and their electrical controls.
Thorough knowledge of repair and maintenance procedures for the types of equipment found in Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants, Storage Facilities, Pumping Stations, and Lift Stations.
Thorough knowledge of and experience using a wide assortment of hand and power tools and other repair or maintenance equipment, including safety equipment.
Thorough knowledge of safety procedures and precautions required when performing maintenance tasks on equipment typically found in the wastewater plant.
Skill in working in a group as the team leader, working with hand and power tools lawn maintenance equipment, basic electrical test equipment and performing maintenance and repair tasks in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.
Ability to read and understand manuals, specifications, drawings, follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to read and comprehend complex technical information and mechanical drawings concerning equipment construction, repair and maintenance procedures.
Ability to lead the team in accomplishing the task at hand efficiently and effectively while following all safety procedures.
Ability to operate light and heavy-duty trucks, boom trucks, heavy lifting equipment, portable pumping equipment, power generation equipment, lawn maintenance equipment and various tools as required.
Ability to calculate flows and size of submersible pumps.
Must possess a High School Diploma or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and five (5) years’ experience as a lift station or utilities mechanic, including two (2) years in a lead capacity.
Additional qualifying education and/or experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted one for the other on a year for year basis.
