General Statement of Job
The position of Civilian Service Aide is a civilian position responsible for reducing initial involvement of sworn agency personnel by focusing on parking lot and property damage situations, as well as parking enforcement. This is a highly responsible position requiring attention to detail, awareness of surroundings, clerical/secretarial skills, common sense and intelligence. It involves handling traffic-related calls for service, reporting delayed calls for service and investigation of traffic crashes. Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities require consistent attention and commitment to the agency's mission. All assigned duties and tasks are expected to be performed in an effective, efficient and safe manner. The jobholder must accept the responsibility to support and promote this organization's mission and comply with its directives. Personal conduct and behavior (on duty as well as off duty) must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public's trust or confidence in the agency or its members. The position requires a high level of problem solving ability, self-initiative, and the ability and willingness to work a majority of the time without direct supervision. Successful performers are those who are capable and willing to make decisions that are consistently in line with the agency's mission, goals and objectives.

May be called upon to render assistance to sworn personnel and/or perform other tasks as needed or assigned by superiors.
Civilian Service Aides are not armed, are not deputies, do not have general arrest powers and therefore, are restricted on the types of duties which may be performed, including the following:
High School Diploma or GED; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associate's degree preferred. Experience in a traffic/law enforcement environment desired but not required.

Physical Demands:
Most tasks are performed outside and typically do not require heavy lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying heavy loads. Position requires jobholder to have clear speaking, hearing and vision abilities. Must possess sufficient physical strength to stand and walk for long periods of time, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
Work Environment:
Work conditions may vary. The majority of tasks are performed outdoors and may occasionally be during inclement weather and dark hours.
Removal:
Removal can be with or without fault of the jobholder or the agency. Economic conditions that cause reductions in work force, the member's inability to attend regularly to work, chronic illness, and a failure to perform competently on any of the critical tasks of the position or a consistent failure to perform competently on regular tasks are among the major reasons for job removal without fault. Failure to support the agency's mission, uphold the oath of office, behave in a manner that supports the Sheriff's Office Code of Conduct, continually comply with preconditions of original employment, or to display due regard for the civil liberties of any persons will lead to removal with to without fault. In addition, accruing atypical amounts of dysfunctional work time or requiring atypical amounts of supervisory counseling to remedial training will lead to removal with or without fault. - Investigating traffic crashes and issuing crash-related traffic citations
- Investigating various traffic complaints
- Monitoring shopping centers regularly for illegal parking of vehicles, e.g. handicapped parking without a handicap parking permit
- Handling of hazardous traffic situations
- Testifying in court
- Handling calls for service and related paperwork as directed
Additional Duties:
May be called upon to render assistance to sworn personnel and/or perform other tasks as needed or assigned by superiors.
Civilian Service Aides are not armed, are not deputies, do not have general arrest powers and therefore, are restricted on the types of duties which may be performed, including the following:
- Shall not operate vehicles in "emergency mode".
- Shall not be dispatched to or respond to any crimes-in-progress calls
- Shall not have general arrest powers and shall not attempt to make physical arrests. In the event of any situation where a physical arrest is indicated, a sworn officer must be dispatched to the scene
- Shall not be dispatched to any disturbance calls involving confrontations between individuals such as family disturbances, neighborhood disputes, etc.
- Shall not, under any circumstances, be allowed to use physical force in the performance of duties, except as a last resort in self-defense
- Shall not make traffic stops
