POSITION SUMMARY
The Microbiology Supervisor is responsible for the operation of Microbiology section of the clinical laboratory. The Microbiology Supervisor facilitates the implementation of hospital and laboratory policies and procedures. Responsible for assisting in training new employees, supervising both Clinical Laboratory Scientists and laboratory phlebotomist's workload organization, and monitoring daily maintenance and quality control. This person will report to the Lab Manager Implements good public relations by representing the laboratory directly to patients, physicians and hospital staff at all times.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for assisting with the selection of methodology and instrumentation to perform laboratory tests appropriate for the patient population served. Responsible for the validation and implementation of new instrumentation. Ensures the standardization of tests methodologies, procedures, instrumentation, and reference ranges.
- Verifies test procedures performed and established the laboratory's test performance characteristics, including, but not limited to the linearity, precision and accuracy of each test and test system.
- Ensures participation in and successful completion of a quality control and approved proficiency testing program commensurate with the services offered. Troubleshoots any problems with the proficiency testing program. Establishes parameters for acceptable level of analytic performance. Ensures that quality is maintained throughout entire testing process from order entry through results reporting.
- Reviews the work of others to ensure that tests are performed in accordance with prescribed standards.
- Assists in maintaining and optimizing work standards to assure a reasonable turnaround time of test results.
- Troubleshoots equipment problems.
- Maintains inventory control of supplies and reagents in his / her section(s).
- Schedules, organizes and delineates duties of personnel.
- Assists manager in performance evaluations of the employees in his / her sections.
- Responsible for the operation of the Microbiology department.
- Works closely with the Laboratory Manager to meet the administrative and financial goals of the department
- Responsible for meeting the service and quality goals of the department. Assumes responsibility for daily operations and meets CLIA requirements for microbiology
- Provides clinical microbiology consultations to medical and hospital staff
- Present micro data reports clearly and concisely to management, including QC performance metrics and trends
- Proactively identifies and implements improvements and lean initiatives
- Responsible for the technical and scientific oversight of the department including assisting in hiring of personnel, training / competency assessment and input for performance review of the staff in their designated area.
- Responsible for making clinical / technical decisions in the resolution of testing / reporting issues, maintenance of the quality and security of department instrumentation, quality control documentation and meeting hospital goals to ensure accurate and timely patient care.
- Responsible for maintaining procedure manuals for all testing performed and the documentation required for regulatory and licensing organizations
- Oversee and manage team schedule of staff and PTO request.
- Work collaboratively with other department leaders to have a more efficient workflow for the Clinical laboratory.
- Responsible for ensuring staff compliance with hospital policies and meeting regulatory requirements within their assigned areas (e.g. coordinate meal breaks, corrected reports, attendance, overtime and punctuality)
- Setting an example- must always be conscious of how his / her words and actions will be perceived.
- Attend minimum of three (3) leadership seminar / workshop annually
- Performs additional duties as directed by the by the Laboratory Director or Manager which are necessary for the efficient operation of the laboratory.
