General Summary of Position: The school nurse plays an essential role in keeping children healthy, safe and ready to learn. The school nurse is a member of a unique discipline and is often the sole healthcare provider in an academic setting.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities of the Position:
- Serve as a health advocate for the students, promote student health and safety. Possess knowledge and skills specifically relating to appraisal and health management of children.
- Receive students to the clinic for illness, injury assessment and intervention; this is inclusive of acute, chronic, and emergency health problems. Appropriate referral and follow-up with parents as needed. Document daily record of health-related incidents and illnesses occurring during the school day.
- Provide management end education for students with chronic disease processes.
- Assist with communicable disease control, manage suspected and diagnosed cases of infectious disease and infestations. Foster education in communicable disease prevention for students and faculty.
- Maintain and administer medications for students that require daily, and as needed, medications during school day. Maintain daily medication log.
- Provide relevant counseling and guidance to assist children and parent/guardians in assuming responsibility for health maintenance of the child.
- Maintain accurate, updated health records and files with health information, state required immunizations and school screening results on all students.
- Maintain required emergency information for school staff. Assist school staff with minor health assessments, wound care and on the job injuries.
- Conduct in services for school staff on health issues as required by the Diocese of Dallas, including Blood Bourne Pathogens, Food Allergies, Epinephrine Pen usage, CPR/AED training/First Aid certification.
- Coordinate and perform required health screenings for students. This includes hearing, vision, heights, weights, scoliosis and acanthosis nigricans.
- Complete state required reports and submit on scheduled times. Maintain required certifications by the State of Texas for required screenings.
- Monitor supply and equipment needs for health clinic. Order and replace supplies as used.
- Maintain monthly AED checks and keep supplies updated as expiration dates occur.
- Review and restock emergency buckets and minor first aid boxes for individual classrooms.
- Maintain field trip binders; organize medical supplies and students’ medications for off-campus trips.
- Continue professional growth through workshop and professional association activities. Participate in Diocesan School Nurse Meetings as held.
- Maintain valid nursing license with the Texas board of Nursing, complete required CEU’s for licensure every two years. Maintain valid CPR, AED and First Aid certification.

Position Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have ability to use clinic/medical equipment; posses knowledge of medical disorders and treatment; knowledge of child growth and development; possess basic pharmacological knowledge; exhibit ability to assess emergency situations and respond accordingly; comfortable knowledge of universal procedures and ab8lity to teach this to others; good oral and written communication skills; basic computer skills; willing attitude to be a part of the school team; strong sense of professionalism; management and organization ability; and the ability/willingness to participate in ongoing professional and staff development.
Education and Experience: Graduate from an accredited nursing program, Bachelor of Nursing Degree preferred. Registered nurse with current licensure in the state of Texas. Have current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
Special Requirements:
Catholic in good standing or with thorough knowledge and understanding of Catholic teachings.
