Purpose of the Role: The Paralegal tracks several case-flow processes and statistics for the Appellate Court of Maryland. Duties includes among other things, pending appeals (ensuring all cases are proceeding on schedule), cases that are stayed and/or remanded to the circuit court, and motions (which regularly number 250-300 each month), and mandates. Drafts routine orders based upon motions for extension of time, motions for postponement, motions for waiver of filing fees, and others. Reviews records for completeness and, as necessary, prepare correspondence or orders as appropriate for correction of records. Reviews mandates before issuance.
Education: AA Degree or Paralegal Certification
Experience: Three (3) years of work experience in a legal or court environment to include researching and analyzing law sources, statues, record judicial proceedings, and legal documents.
Note: 60 college credits or additional related legal work experience may be substitute for the two (2) years of the required Associate?s degree or paralegal certification.
Knowledge of:
? Maryland Rules and Procedures.
? Policies, procedures, and jurisdictional requirements associated with appeals and original proceedings before the appellate courts.
? Functions, procedures, rules, and regulations of the Appellate Clerk?s Office.
? Office and court clerical practices, including filing and the operation of office equipment.
? Accurate record keeping principles, practices, and techniques.
Ability to:
? Ability to read, write, and express oneself effectively both orally and in writing.
? Ability to use legal terms appropriately and find alternative terms when communicating with self-represented litigants.
? Communicate effectively with Judges in order to prepare Orders for the Court.
? Establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse group of individuals, including staff, judges, high-level administrators, law clerks, and attorneys.
? Working with individuals with a range of education and age level.
? Ability to resolve complex problems by employing various strategies.
? Ability to perform legal research when necessary.

? Ability to track multiple data points at once for assistance to Appeals Clerks.
