The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration's (MDOT SHA) Office of Highway Development (Baltimore City) is recruiting for a Civil Engineer (Transportation Engineer IV). This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this MDOT SHA position or function only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.

This is senior or advanced level professional civil engineering work applying engineering theories, principles, and standards to a variety of complex engineering projects and processes in the design and support of highway development.  This recruitment is to fill a vacancy in the Office of Highway Development (OHD).  This position will be assigned to an engineering division within OHD. Assignments may include highway design, drainage design, stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, or land development engineering.  The Civil Engineer may also function as a project manager on minor transportation projects, such as system preservation projects, with guidance from a senior level engineer.  This position may be responsible for coordinating with federal, state, county, and municipal agencies, as well as elected officials, citizens, developers, consultant engineers, contractors, and industry vendors/manufactures.  
 
In addition, these individuals serve as resource to assist in revising policies, manuals, and guidelines, updating standards and specification, completing asset management activities, and developing reports.  The Civil Engineer may be responsible for engineering review and permitting activities related to statutory and regulatory requirements such as American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials  (AASHTO) guidelines, Maryland’s Sediment Control and Stormwater Management guidelines, or other design criteria for all MDOT SHA projects

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:  Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.  

EXPERIENCE:  Four (4) years of experience in professional engineering. 

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS:  Two (2) years of required experience must involve in asset management, design, and/or construction of transportation infrastructure such as highways, transit, rail, or airports.  

This statement contains a selective qualification, which is more focused in scope than the minimum qualifications for this classification.  Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill, or ability).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will possess the following:  
 
  • Four (4) years of experience in the field of civil engineering. This experience may be in any one or a combination of the following:  transportation engineering, water resources engineering, civil engineering and/or highway engineering.
  • Good written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.  
NOTES:

1.  Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.


2.  Possession of a master's degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

3.  Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in the state of Maryland, or in a state with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements.
