The Maryland Department of Transportation The Secretary's Office (MDOT TSO) is now accepting applications for its Cybersecurity Support Technician Apprenticeship Program. This two-year program offers real work experience to supplement students' college coursework and provide a unique training experience designed to enhance their professional development. The Cybersecurity Support Technician Apprentice is an entry-level position providing cybersecurity support by supporting aspects of cybersecurity processes, technologies, and policies. The apprentice technician is part of a higher education Cybersecurity Program.

Key responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to:
  • Assists in developing security policies and protocols; assists in enforcing company compliance with network security policies and protocols
  • Maintains and manages firewalls, including hardware and software, that permit sharing and transmission of information
  • Monitors the suite of cybersecurity products to provide protection against malware, data leaks, phishing attacks, spam, and endpoint vulnerabilities 
  • Assesses and mitigates system network, business continuity, and related security risks and vulnerabilities
  • Review network utilization data to identify unusual patterns, suspicious activity, or signs of potential threats
  • Gain insight into requirements and enforcement regarding data privacy issues (i.e., data loss prevention and applicable regulatory requirements for MDOT data).
Employees may be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays and may be subject to call-in. In addition, employees must have reliable transportation. The DOT Apprentice Cybersecurity Support Technician learns to perform duties under close supervision.

An employee will spend the program's first three months at MDOT HQ in Anne Arundel County, gaining experience and knowledge of the various enterprise-level processes, procedures, tools, and policies. At the end of the initial three months and for the remainder of the two-year program, the employee will work at one of the specific modal administrations (i.e., MAA, MPA, MVA, MTA, SHA, MdTA, TSO). To be eligible and to be awarded a Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship, an apprentice must successfully complete both the required Community College of Baltimore County courseware and on-the-job training while in the employment of the MDOT and under the supervision of the registered apprenticeship program sponsored by CCBC.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. Applicants must be enrolled in CCBC Cybersecurity, IT, or related program, and must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher. Completion or verification of prior CCBC course with a grade of “B” or better in CSIT 111 – Fundamentals of Logic and Design, DCOM 101 – Introduction to Data Communications, and DCOM 217 – CCNA I Introduction to Networks.

Experience:  None

Requirements to apply for the apprenticeship.
1.  Students must have a declared major in Cybersecurity, IT, or related fields.
2.  Students may not have completed more than fifty percent of the 362 hours of apprenticeship-related instruction.
3.  Students must have reliable transportation. The security operations centers are in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Anne Arundel County
4.  The student must be 18 years of age or older.
5.  Ability to perform job requirements with or without reasonable accommodations.
6.  Preferred Qualifications:
     a.  DCOM 101 Introduction to Data Communications
     b.  DCOM 217- CCNA I Introduction to Networks
     c.  CSIT 111 Fundamentals of Logic and Design
     d.  A minimum of 3.0 GPA at CCBC

Notes:
1.  Candidates may be evaluated for DCOM 101 & CSIT 111 competencies.
2. Candidates may be evaluated with a CISCO Academy check for DCOM 217 competencies.
3. CCBC has the sole responsibility to evaluate prior experience and training of qualified applicants to determine if advanced credit is to be granted.None.Employees in this classification may be subject to call-ins 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employment agency with a telephone number where the employee can be reached or will be provided with an MDOT issued cell phone.
