Position Title: Director of Human Resources                             Department: Human Resources

 

Title of Immediate Supervisor/Leader to Whom This Position Reports: Chief Operations Officer

 

*Expected Daily Work Hours: 8:00am – 5:00pm    *Expected Weekly Work Schedule: Monday – Friday           

 

* College offices are normally open from 8:00 AM until 5:00PM, Monday through Friday. However, due to the nature of responsibility to the student body, individual offices or departments may have operating hours that extend beyond this period and may include evening or weekend hours. Non-exempt employees will normally work 8 hours per day.  Overtime (any hours more than 40 per week) for non-exempt employees is required to be approved, in advance by the department supervisor.  Exempt employees will typically work at least 40 hours per week and such additional time as may be reasonably required to fulfill the obligations of their position description.  Such additional work may include evenings and weekends and should be described in this document.

 

Summary of this position:

 

Serve as a visionary, collaborative, and innovative leader at Maryville College, putting people first to make a difference in the lives of employees and students. Develop strategies and guides the direction for all Human Resources priorities, including employee recruitment, talent development, compensation and benefits, performance management, and workplace culture. Serve as a trusted and compassionate business partner, demonstrating commitment to equity in a diverse campus community. The Director works closely with the Title IX Coordinator and is responsible for developing and implementing effective policies and procedures with a commitment to lean business processing to maintain the highest standards of operational excellence within the Human Resources department.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications Required: (please be specific and respond to every question; indicate none if not applicable)

 

Education required to ensure success in this position:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Business Administration, Psychology, Public Administration, or related field, required.
  • A master’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or Industrial/Organizational Psychology is preferred.

 

Experience required to ensure success in this position:

  • 7 of Human Resources experience with progressive responsibilities is required.
  • 2 years of supervisor experience.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting.

  • Good integrity and knowledge on discretion for handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Knowledge of employment law and benefits.
  • Able to solve practical problems and provide effective solutions.
  • Must be able to effectively present and comprehend information needed.
  • Able to obtain, interpret, and implement changes based on gathered data.
  • Solid understanding of standard HR competencies.

                                                                                                                   

License, certification, or registration necessary:

  • Certified in SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, and/or SPHR.               

 

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to navigate campus/public buildings and grounds.
  • May be required to lift/move up to 10 pounds (4.3 kilograms).
  • Able to sit, walk, stand, and handle objects at intervals of time.

 

Environmental conditions:

  • Employees are occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
  • Standard professional office environment with occasional interruptions from visitors.

 

Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment:

  • Proficient in HR programs, contemporary technology, and computers.           

 

Primary duties and responsibilities (Typically ~7 primary duties comprised of 80% of the responsibilities):

 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Responsible for the development and implementation of administrative policies and procedures as set by the College and the Human Resources department.
  • Serves as a liaison between counsel and executive management.
  • Works with the College attorneys on sensitive and confidential employment issues.
  • Creates position classification, pay grades, and merit increase strategies.
  • Ensures compliance with HIPAA policies and procedures.
  • Serves as investigator for Title IX and Deputy Title IX Coordinator.
  • Oversee staff members’ processing of benefits, payroll, recruitment, onboarding and offboarding of employees, including student employees, and volunteers.
  • Provide regular review and adaptation of processes for continuous improvement.
  • Develop and support employee engagement initiatives.

 

Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty, and students.
