Job description:
Oversees and supports the instructional program for English as a Second Language by identifying students of a non-English language background and planning an appropriate educational program based on student proficiency level. Provides direct instruction and supports teaching staff in implementing appropriate instructional methods and accommodations in classroom instruction through professional development and direct instructional coaching.

Qualities of a Desired Candidate Include:
- Considerable knowledge of the State of Tennessee's rules and policies related to English as a Second Language (ESL)
- Working knowledge of curriculum development, program implementation, language learning theory, and ESL best practices
- Ability to teach students using a variety of service delivery models
- Develops instructional program that will increase the acquisition of receptive, oral, and written communication skills for all ELs, focusing on language acquisition across content areas
- Effective leadership of teaching assistants, providing training in language acquisition, state standards, instructional programs, accommodations, etc., and overseeing the implementation of instruction
- Assists with registration process, identifying potential ELs based on the Home Language Survey, screening students, sharing results with stakeholders, and developing the appropriate educational plan based on assessment results
- Develops Individual Learning Plans (ILP) for each English Language Learner (EL) that outlines strategies, accommodations, modifications, and goals to be implemented daily in the classrooms to help ELs be successful
- Ensures that all teachers who provide direct or indirect services to ELs are trained annually on TN ELD standards, ESL instructional methods, second language acquisition, and accommodations.
- Plans, designs, and organizes ESL curriculum across proficiency levels using the WIDA English Language Development Standards and the TN Academic Standards.
- Collaborates with content area teachers to select appropriate instructional materials and technology to differentiate instruction, providing access to core curriculum.
- Serves as a resource on ESL-related matters for teachers, school administrators, instructional personnel, parents and other stakeholders
- Regularly communicates with classroom teachers regarding goals and objectives for each student and the materials and accommodations being used to accomplish those objectives
- Facilitates home/school connection by regularly communicating with parents or guardians regarding their student’s progress and ensuring that the family has access to communication from school and district, providing translation as needed
- Monitors academic growth using formative and summative assessments, and/or benchmarking every 4.5 weeks to ensure that students are meeting expected growth standard
- Assesses ELs using WIDA Screener and WIDA ACCESS as well as appropriate district assessments and uses data to drive instruction and services
- Creates a nurturing and supportive classroom environment with high expectations and strong support that is conducive to learning
- Supports newcomers working with students to develop necessary skills that will help them adjust to school in a new language and culture
- Desires to build positive relationships with students and their families
- Possesses confidence in integrating technology into instruction and as a means of effective two-way communication with all stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships and planning
- Possesses honesty, integrity, professionalism
