MISSION:
Massachusetts Horticultural Society seeks helps people to change their lives and communities for the better through growing plants together. Much of our work takes place through the public Garden at Elm Bank.
Overview:
The Janitor helps take care of the buildings and grounds at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. They work under the Director of Garden and Programs (DOGP) and are responsible for cleaning, general maintenance, and helping with events. This job requires early morning hours, including weekends, to set up and clean up after events. Most days, work can start at 6 AM, but some flexibility is needed.
Job Responsibilities:
- Keep the buildings and public areas clean and well-maintained every day. This includes:
- Vacuuming, dusting, washing windows, deep cleaning, and sanitizing public areas.
- Cleaning and maintaining all facilities and equipment.
- Taking out trash and recycling.
- Sweeping, mopping, and handling spills.
- Cleaning bathrooms and making sure they are stocked.
- Keeping the outdoor areas and gardens free of litter.
- Set up and clean up for events and weddings, especially on weekends. This includes:
- Setting up and taking down tables, dance floors, and equipment.
- Cleaning up after events and removing trash.
- Helping with special events, exhibitions, and programs.
- Being available during event hours if needed.
- Follow the daily work schedule and procedures.
- Keep records of cleaning and maintenance tasks.
- Notice and take care of cleaning or maintenance needs as they come up.
- Safely use and clean all equipment.
- Follow all safety and health rules.
- Work with the DOGP to create daily task lists and maintenance plans.
- Keep track of supplies and request replacements when needed.
- Help with volunteer projects related to facilities and grounds maintenance.
- Be available for extra hours during busy seasons, including:
- Setting up and breaking down major events.
- Removing snow and ice in winter.
Qualifications:
- Experience in cleaning and building maintenance.
- Good attention to detail and strong communication skills.
- Must be able to work early mornings and weekends with some flexibility.
- Must have a valid Massachusetts driver’s license and car insurance.
- Good time management and organization skills.
- Ability to use heavy cleaning equipment and follow safety rules.
- Able to work alone and with a team.
- Reliable transportation.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to walk around the garden in all weather.
- Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs for long periods.
- Must be able to bend, climb stairs, stand for long periods, reach, and do other physical tasks.

REPORTS TO: Director of Garden and Programs
Hours: Up to 40 hours/week
Schedule: Dependent on the MHS calendar of events, includes early mornings or late evenings prior to or following weddings and special events weekends
Season: Year-round
Pay: $20-25/hour
Status: Full-time, hourly
Benefits: Sick time per MA sick laws, three weeks vacation, health, dental, and vision insurance and a 3% 403b match (up to the amount contributed)
Salary : $20 - $25
