Position Summary:
The Accounting Manager, serving in a Senior Accountant capacity, plays a critical role in the timely and accurate completion of the monthly accounting cycle. This includes the processes and related tasks within cash management, fixed assets, month-end close, and financial reporting. This position is responsible for reviewing and posting journal entries on a regular basis, including identifying and recording of fixed asset transactions and performing monthly intercompany reconciliations. The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, technical accounting knowledge, and the ability to manage multiple priorities independently while collaborating effectively with a team. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Revenue accounting
- Manage revenue accounting for local, state, federal, and other funding sources.
- Responsible for recording monthly receipt of per pupil subsidy, chargebacks and related fees
- Ownership of intercompany cash management and related bank transfers
- Calculation and recording of funds due from other revenue streams
- Management of other receivables and billing for other revenue
- Management of accounting for food service program which includes presentation of financial information to various stakeholders
- Payroll accounting
- Review and recording of bi-weekly payroll entries
- Reconciliation of payroll related balance sheet accounts
- Ensure withholdings (including retirement plan withholdings) are accurately and timely transmitted to related agencies
- Fixed assets
- Review and capitalization of fixed assets
- Preparation of annual reporting of fixed assets for audit
- Reconciliation between audited financial statements and supporting schedules
- Month-End and Year-End Accounting Close Support
- Review and posting of journal entries prepared by other team members
- Analysis and recording of other accounting transactions as needed
- Preparation of audit schedules and back-up
- Training and coaching of junior team members
- Accounting for prepaid expenses
- Calculation and management of month-end accruals
- Review and approval of cash related entries and month-end bank reconciliations
- Preparation of month-end balance sheet schedules
- General Accounting & Compliance:
- Maintaining an accurate and well documented general ledger
- Analysis of general ledger accounts to ensure accuracy and completeness of financial statements
- Preparation for and assistance with management of annual financials audits, A-133 audits, charter renewals and other required audits
- Development of accounting policy and procedures
- Management of or participation in special projects
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and ability to apply them to real-world situations.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Blackbaud Financial Edge, Workday) and advanced Excel skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines effectively.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with an emphasis on clarity and collaboration.
- Demonstrated analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and completeness.
- Proven ability to work both independently and in team settings.
- High level of integrity and professional judgment, with a commitment to Mastery Schools’ mission.
- Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or finance from an accredited institution
- Minimum three years of accounting experience; non-profit and/or public accounting experience preferred
- CPA certification or progress towards certification is highly preferred
- Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the role as outlined above, and to work in the environmental conditions required, such as traveling to network campuses, extended periods at a computer, using office equipment, and occasional travel to network campuses.
- This role may require occasional travel between multiple locations. Reliable transportation is essential to fulfill job responsibilities.
