Description :

The Director of Safety and DOT will be responsible for overseeing the safety, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency of propane transportation and distribution. This role requires a seasoned leader with comprehensive knowledge of DOT regulations, OSHA standards, and propane industry safety practices. The Director will ensure that all safety procedures are followed, all vehicles meet DOT requirements, and that the company adheres to all federal and state safety laws related to propane transportation. This position plays a key role in maintaining the safety of employees, the public, and the environment.

Key Responsibilities :

Safety Program Development and Implementation :

  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety programs and policies, ensuring compliance with OSHA and other applicable safety standards.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to ensure all facilities and vehicles are in compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees, including drivers, warehouse staff, and other personnel involved in propane operations.

DOT Compliance :

  • Ensure the company’s transportation operations comply with all DOT regulations, including hours-of-service, driver qualifications, vehicle inspections, and reporting.
  • Oversee fleet maintenance programs to ensure all propane delivery vehicles are in good working order and compliant with DOT safety standards.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of changes in DOT regulations and ensure that the company’s policies and procedures reflect these changes.
  • Accident and Incident Investigation :

  • Oversee the investigation of accidents, near-misses, and safety incidents, ensuring thorough documentation and corrective actions are taken.
  • Develop and implement strategies to prevent workplace accidents and ensure safe work practices are adhered to.
  • Regulatory Reporting and Record Keeping :

  • Ensure proper documentation and reporting of safety activities, DOT inspections, and other required regulatory records are accurately maintained.
  • Submit necessary reports to regulatory agencies, including DOT, OSHA, and environmental authorities, ensuring timely and accurate compliance with all legal requirements.
  • Leadership and Team Development :

  • Lead and mentor the Safety and Compliance team, fostering a culture of safety and accountability.
  • Collaborate with department heads to implement safety policies and continuously improve operational safety standards.
  • Work closely with HR and training departments to ensure employees receive proper certification and training related to safety and DOT compliance.
  • Emergency Response Planning :

  • Develop and implement emergency response plans for propane-related incidents, including hazardous materials spills, leaks, and transportation accidents.
  • Coordinate with local authorities and emergency responders to ensure preparedness and quick response in case of an emergency.
  • Continuous Improvement :

  • Analyze safety data and trends, making recommendations for improvements to reduce risk and improve operational safety.
  • Champion a continuous improvement culture within the company’s safety programs, utilizing feedback and incident analysis to drive change.
  • Requirements : Qualifications :

    Education :

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety management, Occupational Health, Environmental Science, or related field (preferred). Work experience in this field will also suffice.
  • Relevant certifications in DOT compliance, safety management, and hazardous materials (e.g., Certified Safety Professional (CSP), DOT HazMat Certification) are a plus.
  • Experience :

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in safety management or compliance, with at least 3 years in a leadership role, ideally within the propane, hazardous materials, or transportation industries.
  • In-depth knowledge of DOT regulations, OSHA standards, and industry-specific safety regulations related to propane transportation.
  • Experience in fleet management and propane distribution safety practices.
  • Skills :

  • Strong understanding of DOT, OSHA, and environmental regulations.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze safety data and make data-driven decisions.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and safety management software.
  • Personal Attributes :

  • Ability to influence and lead by example, promoting a culture of safety and compliance.
  • Strong ethical standards and integrity.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Ability to conduct site inspections, including walking through facilities and conducting vehicle safety checks.
  • Occasional travel may be required for training, inspections, and compliance audits.
