This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the care and management of shelter animals, administrative and customer service support, and providing oversight, direction, and mentoring to assigned staff.

This is a non-bargaining unit management position.
Q1 - Q5 - DOEHigh school diploma or equivalent.
Seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in position(s) performing related operational duties, including three (3) years of supervisory experience. Experience caring for animals is preferred. Post-secondary education in a related field may substitute for operational experience on a year-for-year basis. A successful candidate will have experience in the following areas:
• Experience with the daily operational management of a facility and team.
• Experience in the animal care or public safety field preferred.
• Experience with administrative duties, including hiring, personnel evaluations, and disciplinary action.
Must complete a baseline audiometry screening and will be required to undergo annual testing as part of the Animal Shelter’s Hearing Conservation Program.
Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical and background check.
Completion of required Incident Command System (ICS) courses in accordance with established Borough policy.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alaska for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Manages the day-to-day operations of the Animal Care Shelter; develops concepts and strategies for achieving goals and objectives.
- Hires, trains, assigns, schedules, supervises, evaluates and disciplines assigned personnel.
- Develops and maintains all shelter Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and related protocols.
- Administers and enforces Title 24 of Borough Code as it pertains to the care of animals under Borough control.
- Administers recordkeeping for the shelter section of the facility.
- Works with the Veterinarian to put in use best practices for sanitation, preventative medical care, medical treatments, intake procedures, scheduling of medical procedures and surgeries.
- Establishes an inventory tracking process and maintains reports on length of stay for all animals in borough care. Ensures the well-being, safety, and humane treatment of animals.
- Develops and delivers employee training; monitors staff to ensure they follow established policies, procedures and protocols.
- Fosters a positive work environment with an emphasis on team work and collaboration.
- Analyzes efficiency of shelter operations and reports findings and recommendations.
- Monitors the evaluation of animal behavior and enrichment, and rescue/foster recommendations.
- Monitors facility inventory and ordering of supplies, creates purchase orders and maintains recordkeeping of supplies and submits for budgetary review; ensures competitive pricing and seeks new vendors for supplies when necessary.
- Maintains and monitors budget expenditures related to shelter operations, identifies and reports potential issues.
- Stays current on animal sheltering best practices and implements changes as appropriate.
- Manages customer situations; responds promptly to customer needs; solicits customer feedback to improve service; responds to requests for service and assistance; meets commitments.
- Ensures the safety and sanitation of the facility, ensures compliance with occupational safety and health regulations applicable to area of responsibility, including but not limited to: proper facilitation of Respiratory Protection Program; proper facilitation of Bloodborne Pathogens Program; proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment; Safety Data Sheet books, inspection reports, training records, job hazard analysis forms and hazard documentation are maintained and up to date; preventive programs and corrective actions are properly implemented.
- Performs the duties of the director in his/her absence as assigned.
Salary : $79,997 - $86,590
