What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laboratory Analytical Chemist position at Matheson Tri-Gas?
The primary function of this position will be to collect samples for analysis using gas cabinets and fume hoods. In addition, simple wet chemistry tests will also be required. Additionally, the successful candidate may need to assist with sample analysis of other products as necessary. Operate and maintain sophisticated gas equipment and analytical instrumentation - Design, develop, and carry out new analytical processes.
Some of the chemicals involved are hazardous in nature. The position involves collecting samples from gas cylinders and preparing them for analysis and then analyzing the samples using various techniques. Basic computer software skills such as Microsoft Office platforms including Outlook email is necessary. Prior experience in a chemistry lab setting is a plus for this position. This position will report to the lab manager or supervisor.
Required Skills:
Collecting samples from gas cylinders
Cleaning laboratory labware
Performing some wet chemistry tests
Making mechanical connections such as VCR, Swagelok, and NPT fittings
Leak checking of equipment to ensure gas tight connections
Use of basic computer software (Microsoft e-mail, word processing, and MS Excel)
Handling flammable liquids, acidic and caustic solutions and materials.
Handling and transporting pressurized gas cylinders
Previous experience and familiar with PPE used in handling chemicals
Accurate, legible documentation and recording of all required lab data
Conducting analytical tests using a variety of instruments
Develop and assist in developing analytical instruments and methods
Additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Direct experience with safely handling, delivering, analyzing, processing and/or abating reactive or corrosive gases used in synthesis, purification or related areas and can quickly become self-sufficient and productive. Ideally prior experience with designing gas handling manifolds to conduct new analytical methodology. - Experience in metals analysis of products using ICP-MS, with knowledge and experience of diverse product sampling methods for such analyses. - Familiarity with gas handling equipment including mass flow controllers, pressure controllers and regulators, various line valves, pressure transducers, pressure relief systems, restrictive flow orifices, thermocouples and temperature control equipment. - Ideally experience with micro-contamination, ultra-high purity systems and environments, i.e. use of clean rooms, particle and hydrocarbon exposure prevention. - Analytical experience to measure trace impurities in gases using FTIR spectroscopy, GC, GC/MS, GC-ICP-MS, APIMS, RGA, CRDS and other moisture analysis methods, Particle measurement, TGA. - Proficiency in Microsoft programs and ideally experience with LabView, Themo Omnic/MKS MG2000/Vista FTIR software, MKS Process eye RGA software, GC data handling software, controls software etc.
Experience
Minimum of 5 years' experience in a relevant field involving the construction of gas manifolds and the hands-on use of specialty gases.
BS Chemical Engineering or Chemistry required
Annual Salary: $62,400 DOE
