The Role
We are looking for a highly motivated individual to play an important role in our operations and technology team focusing on storage, hydrogen, and performance optimization solutions. The Engineering Associate will closely follow grid regulations in different US markets and apply this knowledge on ESS design, optimization, and revenue stack modelling for large-scale utility energy storage projects. The ideal candidate should have substantial knowledge in energy storage technologies, stand alone and hybrid; data analysis and digital applications for modelling; analyzing and optimizing revenues driven by different regulations; and trading scenarios, and grid analysis.
Key activities and responsibilities
- Coordinate with Matrix BESS & H2 development and market teams for defining the BESS&H2 projects in the most optimized way in terms of technology, sizing, project design requirements, grid connection, revenue stack and services to be provided, as well as with the future operational strategy
- Follow up closely on utilities related policies for BESS and H2
- Develop broader relationships with stakeholders related to storage, grid regulations and policy makers, equipment suppliers, technical consultants, etc.
- Analyze energy storage solutions for Matrix portfolio from an economic and technical perspective
- Optimize BESS, hybrid, & stand-alone models according to grid regulations, policies, revenue stacking, and BESS technologies
- Assist reporting activities on asset performance, both technical and economical
- Support business development, M&A, and operations activities to maximize company revenues using storage solutions when applicable and align this expectation with future revenues, offtake agreements, and asset operations
- Stay up to date with latest storage and hybrid technologies, costs, efficiencies, technical parameters, operational ranges, applications per markets, offtake agreements, etc.
- Provide design parameters for storage solutions
- Support the development of technical specifications and commissioning activities for energy storage facilities
- Implement BESS data analyses based on the performance of assets by using different resources such as machine learning, IA, data learning, etc.
- Support supply chain with reviewing and vetting of BESS major equipment proposals and supply agreements
- Engage engineering third party consultants as required
- Act as the technical point of contact to OEM vendors during operations
- Occasionally attend site visits of greenfield opportunities for site recognition purposes
General Skills / Attributes:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, energy markets, business development, or related field
- At least 3 years of relevant experience, ideally with a proven track record in CAISO and/or ERCOT for sizing and modelling utility-scale energy storage facilities
- Strong technical background with batteries, grid regulation, policies, energy markets, and expertise in software, digital tools, and system integration
- Knowledge of programming and software tools such as Fractal, Python, PowerBI, etc
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, macros, pivot tables, etc.
- Solid communication skills when conducting technical discussions in diverse cultural environments
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Professional fluency in English
- Willingness to travel as needed
