Position Summary/Objective: The Pathologist Assistant's duties are primarily concentrated in processing surgical specimens.
Essential Functions:
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Identify specimen, including patients name, hospital identification numbers, and source of tissue as listed on the specimen container and paperwork.
- If errors are found, the assistant should rectify the problem through the primary source (hospital or clients office)
- Resolve specimen identification issues, e.g., calling hospital or physicians office personnel for clarification.
- Evaluate pertinent clinical information given to determine proper specimen sampling.
- Describe the specimen, including measurements, color, shape, and anomaly.
- Select sections of the specimen for histologic processing or submit the entire specimen.
- Dictate above information at the grossing area
- Clean and disinfect the grossing area to eliminate cross contamination
- Resection specimens are requested by the pathologist
- Frozen Sections: verify patient information as listed on the specimen container paperwork.
- Dissect and sample specimen
- Stain slide in routine Hematoxylin and Eosin
- Sample for microbiology, flow cytometer or other special procedures
- Clean area after completing procedure to eliminate cross contamination
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree; Field of Study: Biology or Life Science degree
- 1 plus year experience in laboratory setting
- Graduate of NAACLA accredited training program or experience required
- ASCP certification preferred
