General Summary

The Laborer will safely and effectively perform general construction work for underground telecommunications utilities. This is a hands-on role supporting the installation and maintenance of fiber optic cable and infrastructure under the guidance of a Foreman.

Essential Job Functions

  • Perform general construction tasks as directed by the Foreman
  • Install and maintain underground fiber optic and telecommunications cabling
  • Maintain visual and audible contact with team members and surrounding hazards
  • Dig pits, trenches, and potholes using hand tools or mechanical tools as required
  • Load and unload tools, equipment, and materials
  • Set up and clean up job sites, including restoring or landscaping disturbed areas
  • Establish safety perimeters using signage, cones, and barriers (may include traffic direction)
  • Assist in setting up construction sites and ensuring proper safety procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management*

  • Basic understanding of how construction equipment operates
  • Ability to use hand tools and small mechanical tools
  • Able to follow safety guidelines and job instructions
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record
  • Strong commitment to safety (OSHA and FMCSA/DOT compliance)
  • Effective communication skills with crew members, customers, and vendors
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and travel as needed

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous construction or utility experience is a plus

Travel

  • Extensive travel and overnight stays outside the Brainerd Lakes Area are expected

  • External: Represent MC Fiber positively to customers and the community—to them, you are MC Fiber

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift/carry 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs as needed
  • Ability to stand, crouch, bend, sit, climb, and use hands throughout the workday
  • Must walk on uneven terrain such as dirt, grass, asphalt, or rocky surfaces
  • Visual abilities must include close and distance vision, depth perception, and color recognition
  • Must be able to work while wearing required PPE (hardhat, HiViz gear, boots, safety glasses, etc.)

Work Environment

You’ll be regularly exposed to:

  • Outdoor elements: extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, dust, humidity, wind, etc.
  • Rough terrain, vegetation, insects, and potential contact with hazardous plants
  • Loud noise from equipment and machinery
  • Risk of electrical shock, moving mechanical parts, and vibration
