Summary
Primarily in the field on a project site and the Drilling Assistant will be expected to perform work year-round, in varying weather conditions that may be wet, cold or hot. The Geotechnical Drilling Assistant will perform subsurface exploration duties under the direction of the Geotechnical Driller. Drill methods may include: auger drilling, mud rotary drilling, and diamond bit coring techniques. Work may also include the installation of instruments such as piezometers, monitor wells and inclinometers. Work as part of a multiple person team on projects. Anticipated daily tasks include: navigate and locate drilling points, conduct site reconnaissance, load/unload tooling, materials and samples, classify soil and rock samples, perform routine maintenance and basic repairs on drilling equipment. Depending on workload and client demand, this position may be required to work nights and weekends. Overnight travel is common.
Essential Functions
- Load tooling and materials
- Assist in drilling operations and instrumentation and monitoring well installation.
- Collect soil and rock samples and log field data.
- Preform routine repairs and maintenance.
- Perform basic navigation and site reconnaissance.
- Drive a medium-duty truck and trailer.
- Learn to inspect and how to maintain equipment.
- Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
- Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.
Competencies
- High School Diploma/GED
- Requires good driving record and valid driver’s license.
- Must pass pre-employment drug screening test.
- Must be able to lift 50-80 pounds
- Can expect to work with hand tools and some chemicals for drilling
- Able to load, unload, and move large equipment, materials and tools
- Continuous walking, stair climbing, and lifting
- Full range of physical motions associated with general labor work
- Continual exposure to all outdoor weather conditions (extreme heat and cold); exposure to noise and fumes generated from motorized equipment
Work Environment
This job operates primarily outside regardless of weather conditions year-round.
