Job Summary:
The assistant manager will assist the store manager in managing store and yard operations to optimize sales and profitability while satisfying the needs of the employees and customers.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Directly supervises 1 – 50 employees.
- Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff or assists management with this process.
- Coordinates and oversees the day-to-day workflow of team members within the store.
- Assists the manager with addressing employee concerns, conflicts, and personnel actions, including discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assists with developing monthly, quarterly, and annual plans with the store manager to meet company goals for operations and profitability.
- Assists the store manager in analyzing end-of-day, weekly, and monthly reports, including daily KPI reports and monthly profit-and-loss statements, to monitor sales, gross profit, and inventory activity. Identifies trends and takes proactive or remedial action to manage business situations.
- Ensures exceptional customer experience occurs through personal interaction with contractors and retail customers.
- Resolves customer complaints as necessary.
- Assists customers with product questions and purchases by providing information about product usage, availability, and application.
- Assists in directing and motivating employees to attain the goals of the store.
- Oversees the new employee orientation training and ongoing training of all employees for all employees in accordance with company guidelines and the needs of the individual store facility.
- Ensures that employees are properly trained and prepared to provide an exceptional customer experience.
- Manages employees, work schedule planning, assets, and inventory to meet coverage needs and meet labor goals.
- Makes recommendations to the store manager to improve productivity, reduce losses, maximize equipment performance, and improve the quality of service for the retail facility.
- Assists the store manager in monitoring the inventory of merchandise in all departments, including inventory valuation and shrink levels.
- Manages merchandise levels by ensuring that the proper ordering, receiving, pricing, and merchandising procedures are followed.
- Assists the store manager in overseeing store and yard operations through regular inspections of the sales floor and yard to ensure completion of daily opening and closing procedures, project completion, good housekeeping, inventory control, merchandising, and customer service.
- Ensures that proper security measures are in place and carried out by employees, including regular inspection of the fence line in the yard.
- Communicates with credit and the store manager regarding any credit issues that need to be resolved.
- Assists with establishing and reviewing market penetration, pricing, margins, selling approaches, and itineraries with the Commercial Sales Representative (CSR).
- Reports market activity to store manager by monitoring and analyzing competitive price lists and products.
- Makes product recommendations to the store manager for inclusion in the product line.
- Assists the store manager in maintaining and ensuring compliance with control and audit systems that result in a safe, productive, and profitable operation. Communicates and educates employees to follow procedures necessary for store operations.
- Compiles and processes accurate and timely records and reports. Makes recommendations to the store manager for methods to protect company assets and profitability.
- Actively works to assure the safety and well-being of employees, customers, and suppliers.
- Ensures that daily inspection reports are completed on all fleet assets.
- Models to store employees what compliance with company policies and procedures looks like, including the ethical standards, integrity, and the Business as Unusual (BAU) culture of the company.
- Opens and closes the retail store facility as required.
- Responds to after-hours alarm calls at the store location.
- Attends and participates in all store meetings and company-sponsored management programs as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to prioritize tasks, delegating when appropriate.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, MAC21, and related software.
- Excellent time management skills, with the ability to assign and delegate tasks.
- Must successfully pass all company training regarding equipment usage, including obtaining the forklift certification.
- Must have a current driver’s license and auto liability insurance.
- Occasional overnight travel is required.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, construction science, or equivalent preferred.
- Retail lumber supply experience is preferred.
- Successful completion of the company’s management training program.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
- Must be able to traverse through the store, yard, and job sites.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times, and occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds.
- May need to work nights, weekends, and holidays, and be able to respond to store during closed hours in cases of emergencies.
- Must be able to work in various types of weather.
