Job Description :
Reporting to the Associate Provost for Equity and Belonging, the Director of the Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is responsible for providing visible leadership and direction for McDaniel College's diverse student population through facilitation of programming and services that promote a supportive community.
Basic Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, support and effective educational training to student organizations, student organization leaders, and various constituency groups, which are based in a deep understanding of enabling an inclusive environment, power, privilege, intersectionality, and social justice.
- Provide ongoing opportunities for students, student organizations, and members of the College community to participate in meaningful civil discourse about topics related to diversity and inclusion.
- Offer guidance, coaching and support to help students acquire skills necessary to create an inclusive environment for all to thrive within.
- Collaborate with diverse student groups and groups of students on events and programming that facilitate identity development, mentorship, personal growth, understanding of social identities, and action towards social change.
- Lead the development of Celebration Month steering committees and coordinate activities with student organizations that plan and execute these events. (Student organizations may include Black Student Union, Asian Community Coalition, Hispano-Latino Alliance, Allies, Jewish Student Union, Muslim Student Association, etc.).
- Oversee the Edge Experience Program for first year students including identifying Edge students with the Admissions Office, communicating with students about the program, helping recruit students, and managing all aspects of the program.
- Recruit, hire and train the Edge Experience Mentors who serve in this role for the entire academic year.
- Facilitate the monthly Edge Experience program sessions that provide new students with ongoing social support, introduce them to valuable campus resources, and provide additional information that is time specific, i.e. how to prepare for spring class registration and the housing lottery, what to do about poor mid-term grades, campus and summer employment tips, etc.
- Ensure that all bias incidents involving students are documented and reported to the appropriate authorities, if necessary.
- Plan, implement, and promote social justice and diversity related programming throughout the year in collaboration with other campus-wide programmers.
- Facilitate restorative justice circles, including planning, preparation, and leading discussions among participants.
- Monitor budget contracts related to student programming.
- Prepare reports and data metrics as needed. Communicate effectively with multiple constituency groups (faculty, staff, external agencies, alumni and family members of students) to understand their needs and concerns.
- Actively participate in student recruitment and retention efforts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
