Ecological Restoration Technician
Responsibilities:
Ecological Restoration Technicians will work with a team to maintain and restore forests, prairies, wetlands, and other plant communities. This position will provide valuable field experience for recent graduates and other entry-level environmental scientists.
Duties will include:
- Use various methods to perform maintenance and management of natural communities.
- Applying basic knowledge of native and invasive plant species
- Chemical mixing, handling, and application to control invasive species via backpack application, wicking, and ATV spraying
- Assistance with prescribed burn activities including but, not limited to; burn preparations, handling burn equipment, maintaining a strong line of communication during a burn, and implementing safe burn practices
- Operate brush clearing equipment safely including, minor power equipment such as weed whips, mowers, and chainsaws
- May direct field crews and work closely with project managers to ensure goals are met
- May direct prescribed burns and help create formal burn plans
- May help create seasonal management plans for high priority site
Qualifications:
- College student or recent graduate studying in the field of Environmental Science, Ecology, Geology, or related field is preferred
- Basic knowledge of Midwest/Chicagoland natural communities, flora, and fauna
- Have or willing to obtain National Wildlife Fire Coordinating Group S130/S190 coursework
- Have or willing to obtain an Illinois Pesticide Operator License
- Ability to work between 40 and 50 hours a week with occasional weekend availability preferred
- Ability to work in rough or rugged terrain over a full workday
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and walk for long periods of time
- Valid driver’s license
