Job Summary
The Accountant assists the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) by overseeing the accounting operations of the agency, providing financial information to management by researching and analyzing accounting data and preparing reports; maintaining the general ledger; monitoring the accounting activities of the accounting staff; entering journal entries into the accounting system; and administering payroll.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepare, examine, and analyze accounting records, financial statements, and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards.
- Maintain the general ledger and other accounting records (fixed assets and depreciation, designated funds, endowment fund, retirement fund and insurance, etc.) in conformance with GAAP.
- Apportion the aggregate summary operating budget to line item detail, operational units and months.
- Prepare bank reconciliation on a monthly basis; prepare analyses of prepaid insurance, investments and endowment transfers; reconcile receivables and payables with general ledger balances.
- Prepare required schedules, reports and analyses, including the trail balance, for the annual financial audit.
- Assist with the preparation of the annual operating and capital budgets.
- Responsible for the preparation and processing of bi-weekly payroll; track and deduct all garnishments and other special payroll deductions.
- Train new accounting staff and act as a consultant for accounting, finance and data processing issues; assist with the preparation of financial policies and procedures; fill in for accounting staff as necessary.
- Operate within the guidelines of the Employee Handbook, department Operations Manual, and agency policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the CFO.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance and four (4) years’ experience in the accounting or financial field; or
- A Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field with experience in accounting or finance; or
- Experience as a certified public accountant (CPA) preferred but not required.
- Experience in Human Services environment preferred but not required.
- Knowledge Requirements:
- Computer and software applications (Sage, Windows, MS Office, Internet applications, etc.) necessary to perform the duties of the position.
- Principles and practices of accounting and bookkeeping.
- Operating and capital budgeting.
