DEFINITION: This is a basic trainee level position established for the purpose of training the incumbent for higher level duties. The incumbent works toward completion of state certification though the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy, receives field training, firearms training, and other training as needed to fulfill assigned duties.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent may not be required to perform all duties, and may be required to perform additional, position related tasks. Work assignments provide a practical understanding of the organization and its programs, policies, and objectives, as well as experience in the application of principles, procedures, practices, work techniques, regulations, and reference material to actual operating situations. On-the-job training and, when available or appropriate, formal training will be provided on the basic aspects of the duties of the position.
The incumbent assists in the enforcement of Federal, State, and local traffic and criminal codes, laws ordinances and statutes. Incumbent exercised effective law enforcement action to prevent crime through a visible law enforcement presence, to stop illegal acts as they occur, and to preserve the peace, safety, and order within the community. Works closely with other law enforcement agencies, such as Federal, State, city, and Tribal organizations.
Patrols areas of assignment performing routine duties, e.g., building checks, stopping traffic violators, and issuing citations, testing, and arresting intoxicated drivers, assisting stranded motorists, checking abandoned vehicles, picking up abandoned minors and runaways, taking intoxicated persons into protective custody and clearing the road of injured or dead animals or other obstructions and taking appropriate action.
Responds to trouble calls, either as first officer responding or as backup to another officer. Examples include investigating accidents, family disturbances, burglaries, robberies, homicides, unattended deaths, property damage, vandalism, child abuse assault and battery, rape, search and rescue operations, crowd control, hit and runs, attempted suicides, etc. or conducts criminal investigations initiated either by the receipt of a complaint or as follow up to reports received by other deputies.
Assists with investigations of accidents, felonies, misdemeanors, and minor crimes; call for backup and emergency vehicles, administers first aid, secures the scene, obtains physical evidence, seeks out and questions witnesses and suspects, takes detailed measurements and photographs. Issues citations or makes arrests, as appropriate. Prepares detailed investigative reports.
Controls scene in the case of major crimes, unattended deaths and serious accidents involving deaths, until investigators arrive and assists in investigation as requested.
Takes arrested persons into custody, books, fingerprints, photographs, and files formal charges as necessary. Assists with service of Federal, State and local warrants, subpoenas and other court papers. Testifies at hearings and trials in Federal, State, local and Tribal courts. Prepares and submits reports of incidents and traffic accidents, also daily activities and other narrative and statistical reports as required.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Incumbent is required to complete/pass an initial firearms training and qualification, and subsequent annual/biannual firearms qualification and other training as required by the Sheriff’s Office.
Maintains uniform for a clean, orderly appearance. Maintains weapons and other equipment in good working order. Ensures that the assigned vehicle is cleaned and serviced periodically and that repairs are accomplished as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must be at least 18 years of age at date of hire.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must be physically fit to complete and pass the New Mexico Department of Public Safety Fitness Standards.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous experience in the security and/or the correction, detention field.
- Military experience as evidenced by a DD214 and a Registry Transcript.
- College coursework or an Associate degree in Psychology, Criminal Justice, or related field.

Completion certification in the area of law enforcement to include, but not limited to:
- Defensive Tactics
- Verbal De Escalation Tactics
- Less Lethal Weapons, etc.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to write reports containing technical information.
- Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
- Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
- Skill in the use of first aid procedures.
- Knowledge of police procedures, including crime/incident investigation, reporting, and documentation.
- Skill in providing protection services to individuals.
- Ability to complete moderately complex administrative paperwork.
- Skill in the operation of police equipment such as radar and breath alcohol analyzers.
- Knowledge of procedures and standards for the gathering and processing of legal evidence for court cases.
- Skill in utilizing building security and lock systems and procedures.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: The incumbent of this position must comply with established safety guidelines, directives and policies of the County and Sheriff’s Office.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Must complete/pass a pre-employment background investigation, personal history statement, personal integrity questionnaire.
- Successful candidate(s) must submit to a pre-employment physical assessment, written examination, polygraph examination (agency optional), medical examination, drug analysis test, and a psychological examination.
- Must complete/pass the New Mexico Law Enforcement Basic Academy within one (1) year of date of hire.
- No felony charges/convictions at any time
- No misdemeanor charges/convictions within the preceding five (5) years
- No charges/convictions of a crime of moral turpitude
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES:
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License at time of employment and be insurable for liability purposes; and the ability to possess a New Mexico Driver’s License within six (6) months of hire date.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The incumbent works under direct guidance and supervision of a Sergeant. As the incumbent gain’s knowledge and experience, close supervision will be gradually relaxed until the employee is capable of functioning under the normal degree of supervision expected at the next higher pay level.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
- Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: Applicants selected for interviews will be asked to take part in a basic typing/computer assessment test.
